RTX 4090 driver crashes/black screen when watching video

Hi all,

I have a Gigabyte 4090 Gaming OC and it's been brilliant in games. However, occasionally when watching Netflix in Chrome - only when first launching the video, it will cause a black screen and then either recover, or sometimes fully crash Windows and force a reboot. Checking the event viewer, I see the following error on the occasions that recovery happens:

The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\Device\000000a8
Error occurred on GPUID: 900

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table

Also:

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I am running the latest game ready drivers (527.56). I have not had any issues with games and this is a completely clean install of Windows 11 on a fresh drive. The GPU is running entirely at stock.

I have done some searching online and found many threads discussing similar sounding issues (not exclusive to this AIB model), e.g:

If I am having the same issue, a possible solution is apparently to change the Power management mode in NVIDA control panel to 'Prefer maximum performance'. I don't really want to do this though as it should be working normally.

I have experienced this issue both with HDR on and off. I have Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling enabled in Windows (on by default in W11) and hardware acceleration enabled in Chrome (on by default). My motherboard BIOS is also up to date.

Given the price of this GPU, I don't really want to attempt a BIOS update myself.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced any similar issues with watching any kind of video with a 4090?

I am still within 14 days of receiving this GPU, wondering if I should RMA? Would really like to avoid this though as I have already sold my 3080 and don't want to be left without a GPU.

Thank you :)

Thanks for the replies!

rma time I think have you tried different drivers .

No, it was a clean W11 install, I went directly to the current drivers (527.56) as soon as the installation had finished. Windows update didn’t even get a chance to install anything else. I have also installed the latest AMD chipset drivers. The GPU has a 4yr warranty, just trying to decide if I RMA now or carry on and draw on the warranty further down the line if this turns out not to be driver/software related.

HAd those crashes before and it turned out to be the system RAM. You OC'd the RAM or running XMP? Run the ram at native 2400Mhz and see if the crashes / black screens stop.

Looking at some of the reddit posts seems it's more driver related than a faulty GPU if others are experiencing the same.

What about a different browser for watching Netflix, same?

I am running XMP, and have been since Jan 2021 with this RAM, never had any issues. I will try and disable it - I would rather keep it on though for the improved performance.

I really hope it’s just driver related. I have not yet tried another browser.

The trouble with this issue is that it’s so intermittent and videos play fine most of the time, so trouble shooting could be a slow process. I will also try YouTube and Amazon to see if they cause crashes.

I see you say Windows didn't have a chance to update any further as you went directly to the NV drivers. I'd update windows fully BEFORE installing any drivers. When reinstalling a fresh OS - always update that fully first before installing chipset AND GPU drivers. Though if you'd taken a fresh copy of the W11 install it should be the most up to date one or you have an old one on a USB stick? I'm still on W10 and always update the OS first after base installation before all the other drivers.

Newer drivers will be written assuming the latest OS build and will have been written for an upto date OS.

I dont think it's the RAM either - but I have had the same errors from RAM that was probabaly binned on it's lower limit. Swapedd it out and it went away. Also if you have 2 sticks of RAM - They need to be in a certain two slots of the baord when onkly using two. Check you have the correct slots when only using 2 as many X570 boards specify either slots 1,3 or 2,4.

Thanks for the tip re: drivers, I'll make sure I let Windows update do it's thing fully next time I do a clean install and before doing anything else. Yes, I created a USB drive using the latest 22H2 W11 image via the tool downloaded from the MS website. I seated my two sticks of RAM in slots 2 and 4 when I built the system last year as per mobo manual, so all is good there. I will disable XMP and see how I get on.

I really hope the GPU is ok as I have been so happy with it over the last week. It's incredible in games and I have not had a single issue in that regard.

This issue appears to have completely resolved itself for me. I’ve not had a single driver crash for two weeks. I think it may have been an issue with Chrome.

Incidentally, I did run the NVIDIA firmware update tool and it reported no update necessary. My card is also running the latest Gigabyte BIOS from the factory - so no update needed there either.

I’m pretty sure this was a Chrome/driver issue. I can’t replicate it at all now though.
