Rubbish ASDL router. Can I use my cable router to manage home network?

Hi all,

My parents have a useless O2 router that's slow and hangs all the time. Is there any way I can use a Netgear cable router that I have to manage the network and use the O2 router as a modem style device, passing straight through to the cable router? Once it's setup all wireless connections would go via the cable router.

Cable router is WRT54GL v1.1.
