Right, got my 8800 GTS 640mb today.

Done all the business with uninstalling the onboard hefore 6150 drivers. shut down. put in the new card. booted up. installed drivers latest etc.

Played some games. They all ran exactly how i'd expect (crysis, denied ops, eve). So all seemed well. until i booted up CSS. no matter what the settings Im getting around 15-30fps. I've tryed playing around with CSS settings, completely reinstalling it etc. Nothing seems to help. Even tryed beta drivers to no avail.

Any ideas?

Its Vista x64 as well.

cheers

What CPU have you got?

I was getting 80fps average with an 8800gt and an E2180@Stock but when i OCed my E2180 to 3.2Ghz i now get 140Fps. (Source engine is CPU limited)

Yeah, not that.

Not anything in the config I don't think. (As I said reinstalled so everything went back to default).

I'm thinking its a driver / driver option issue.

Just installed an older driver. Again nothings changed.

Might have to bite the bullet and reinstall windows!

wow how u managed combine pentium 2 with 8800 gt :D joking emm its definetly something wrong in your system and + u running 16aa 16 af? i guess ?

The CPU will do no favours for you. It doesn't make a difference if the X1950 ran well with it, the 8800 will totally bottleneck under it.

Have you tried fully and i mean fully, deleting Steam altogether, even every source file that isn't linked to CSS and tried reinstalling? If you just deleted CSS from the Steam GUI, then it wont have deleted the source files.

i dont think reinstalling windows is the answer. but yes it will be your cpu holding you back (single core right?)

1.9 AM2 Dual Core. Clocked at 2.3

I'd like too. But I'm not. I've, for now, turned every option to the lowest possible setting. And the FPS doesn't change one bit.

Yeah I know. But What I'm saying is. More powerful card + same cpu. Therefore performance should be at the very least exactly the same no?

I haven't, I just deleted CSS folder to get rid of all my configs and stuff (very old).

I shall uninstall it all properly shortly and see what happens.

That doesn't matter, there's just no way that an A64 at 2.3ghz (dual core or otherwise) should be getting those framerates on lowest possible settings with a GTS640.

hmmm this is a bit odd ... its definatly a case of bottleneck. cpu cant keep up with graphics so it has to throttle or slow down. my specs are in my sig and im getting 80fps average , maxed out on css.

have you sorted out your rates recently ?

in console type these

rate 30000
cl_cmdrate 100
cl_cmdrate 100

Rates make no difference. :(

Nor does a complete reinstall of Steam + CSS.

What I'm going to do now is stick on a ghost image of my previous XP install (has correct drivers on it). And see what happens. If it works then I will reinstall Vista. If that dosent fix it looks like I'm stuck on XP for a while!

Well, I used to run a Pentium 4 3.00Ghz with an X1950 Pro. In css, I would get about 20-30 FPS on all high settings, turning down the settings didn't help the FPS at all.

I did everything, bought a new PSU, new ram.... In the end I just built a complete new PC with a C2D CPU (E4600) and now it runs CSS perfect.

IMHO it's your CPU that's causing the problems.

Fixed it.

Reinstall of vista worked a charm (Had to do it anyway). Can only assume it was some kind of driver issue or something.

60fps dropping to 40fps~ish in big firefights. With everything on top wack (well apart from HDR becuase it looks crap imo (not that i play and HDR enabled maps)) @ 1680*1050.

Regardless of CPU i knew something wasn't right so I'm well chuffed it's sorted :D

Thanks for your help
