I've currently got the following setup:

Athlon 64 3200+
2Gb RAM
Leadtek 6800GT 256mb AGP
XP x64
forceware 91.31

I run all games at 1680x1050 due to my nice dell 20" widescreen monitor

However I'm currently getting around 20fps on CS:S (and DoD:S), 14-17 on Oblivion, and only 20fps on Neverwinter nights!

These games aren't really that playable at such a low framerate.

I'm sure I've had DoD at around 40fps before and I can't understand why the drop in fps lately. Haven't changed anything!!

Can anyone suggest any possible reasons??

If a card upgrade is in order, could anyone recommend a good AGP replacement for my 6800GT?

Thanks!

Depends on what your budget would be, and if you would consider just going PCI-E, as you can get much better PCI-E cards, and motherboards for about the same price as an AGP card. :)

I'm thinking if I upgrade I'd just go for the best AGP I can get.

Would cost too much atm for a total cpu, mobo, mem, gfx upgrade - I think I"ll wait for that and see how conroe pans out.

Your CPU, and memory you have now is fine, you only need to get a PCI-E motherboard, and a new gfx card, which will be the same price as just an AGP card on its own, and it will be a much better card. :)

If you want AGP still though, then the best is the Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800 GS+ SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-032-GW) at £305.44, thats including the VAT, thats a 7900 GT, but as i said you can get a PCI-E 7900 GT, for about £180, and a PCI-E motherboard for a lot less than that, and its the same card, or you could get the faster x1800 XT 256mb at only £170, plus the new PCI-E mobo for less. :)

Hmmm thats a good point.

Could you recommend a good socket 754 mobo and gfx card for less than the:
Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800 GS+ SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-032-GW) - £264.32

Would a pci-e 7900gt be so much better as to justify the hassle of new mobo? don't much like the idea of buiying another Socket 754 mobo tbh

ta for the help!

I assumed you were using s939, my bad. :(

Not sure if theres any PCI-E 754 boards as i don't know much about 754, but im sure somone can let you know if theres any. :)

You can get 754 PCI-E boards but ocuk dont stock them anymore.

If it were me, id sell the mobo/cpu/gfx you have now on MM, offer them as a package so they all go together. You should get at least £150 for it all.

Then replace them with the following ( assuming you gave £300 to put to it, as indicated in a previous post )

CP-121-AM AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3700BNBOX) (CP-121-AM)
£79.95 £79.95
GX-018-BG BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-018-BG)
£169.95 £169.95
MB-111-AS Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-111-AS)
£85.95 £85.95
Subtotal £335.85
VAT £58.78
Total £394.63

Should be a huge boost over what you have now.

If you prefer the ATI X1800XT, then get thnat instead of the 7900GT, its also £30 cheaper :)

hmmm that is tempting, depends how much I want to spend now I suppose.

Would the option you described by a lot better than going for the AGP 7800gs+ ??

Yea, because the 7800GS is the fastest AGP card you can buy, but with the bits i specced for you, you have the option to add another card at a later date. Plus the 7900GT is quicker than the 7800GS AGP :)

its not a 7900gt because its got 512mb ram so its price is justified to some extent, its closer to a 7900gtx than a gt.

The 512mb memory will not make it closer to a 7900GTX than a 7900GT. Most GTs do at least 550/1600 which is closer to a GTX (and faster wilh volt mod). The price premium is mostly because it is AGP. You can get the Gainward PCIe 7900GT 512MB Golden Sample for £250 which has clocks of 550/1400. This is closer to a GTX!

You need to be playing at extreme high res to make use of the extra memory. This will no doubt change next year when we get the likes of Crysis, but until then, 256 is plenty.

IMO you should sell what you have and get what Meatloaf specced. :D

Skt 754 pci-e boards can be had from £35 upwards if you look around, leaving you a good £200 for either a x1800xt or 7900gt. Thats the route I'd go, allthough the 939 3700sd is a cracking chip that clocks well. Either of those routes would be better than sticking with an agp card.

Good recommendation, but I'd try sorting out the computer you already have before buying something new or at least diagnose the problem.

Did the framerate drop whilst using the same hardware (including the monitor) ??? Maybe a software/driver issue?

I had an odd FPS issue with an old card a while back, it was an ATI something.

I noticed thet my FPS had dropped buy a fair amount and the picture wasn't as sharp as it once was after looking a round I noticed the drivers had been set for speed rather than quality so I put it back on quality.

That gave me back a sharper image and nealy doubled the speed, I carn't see how this should be but it was.
