any hardcore quake 3 players here use tft/lcd ? and if so what make and model and are you happy with it. thx

Not really hardcore Q3 but pretty much Hardcore UT2004 + Farcry and I use the Samsung SyncMaster 225BW 22" Widescreen, Tiny bit of light bleed, hardly ever notice it though, I can't notice any input lag in this model what so ever, back on topic, I also own a Samsung 215TW, I originally brought it for my main machine but the input lag was that bad I hooked it up to my secoundry machine and went back to using my old 19" tft until I brought the SM225BW which I'm really pleaed with.

what is it that makes CRTs more 'responsive' (i haven't gone back to my old iiyama vision master so i haven't experienced the CRT -> TFT -> CRT change) ? technically is it the actual response time of TFTs? eg 8ms or what have you or just 'something about crt's' ? lol just curious :)

No input lag and no ghosting. It's just a fundamentally different way of working. The ghosting is because the pixels stay illuminated for a brief time and I guess the input lag of a TFT is due to the screen building a frame before displaying it???

Currently I am using my trusty Dell P790, running 1024 x 768 @ 100mhz. It uses a Sony Triniton flat CRT screen. The colours are fantastic and it holds a rock steady image.

My Gf has an Acer Laptop which has a wonderful display. My friend who does uses photoshop for a living bought an Acer Widescreen which I had the pleasure of trying. This was a wonderful flat panel. Playing Oblivion was amazing.

I just turned down a ViewSonic VE902m 19" TFT for £40. Why? Because no matter what I did I couldn't get the contrast and the brightness the way I want it. There is no point in having a 800:1 brightness contrast ratio when all what happens is the white is far too bright and hurts your eyes. I desperately wanted to get this TFT working, as for £40. Then I tried watching the simpsons and south park on it.... The final straw was gaming. Horrid, horrid TFT.

I am now back on my Dell and the vibrant colours are superb. I'm not sure if the contrast ratio on my Dell is greater than the ViewSonic, I have a feeling that in theory it isn't. But in practice it certainly blows every TFT I have used away.

I still want a TFT as they do seem a lot easier on the eyes in different lighting whereas a CRT has to have the right lighting to avoid eye strain. Also the reclaimed desk space would also be welcome.

I have viewed a few other TFT's, but currently the best I have seen are from Acer. I admit I have not tried that many. But one thing is for sure I will certainly be asking for a demonstration before I make any purchase of any TFT with a variety of different media and tasks.

I am even thinking of buy a 21 or greater CRT. Certainly cheaper than the corresponding TFT. Its just a shame they are not smaller..

I'd like a new TFT but I cant bare parting with my 17" pure flat CRT. It still works perfectly and has excellent sharpness and colour.

Only thing I didn't like about it was the 2 lines on the top and bottom third of the screen. But that's a "feature" with all Trinitron tubes, and after a while you can't notice it. :D

I'll probably get a 19" TFT when it gives up the ghost though. (pun intended :p )

Well ummm

i went from a 17inch CRT to this Asus built 19inch widescreen and gaming has never been better...

5ms response time

i think some games would be ok on tft's like wow oblivion and other slow games, but what about fast driveing games and sports games and especially quake 3 fast paced fps games ?

Certainly not all widescreens are as bad as the 215TW. My 2007WFP is both quick in terms of ghosting/texture blur, and has minimal lag, to my eye anyway. I'm sure the 20" NEC with the IPS panel is just as good if not better too.

There are a few other areas where my screen is inferior to a quality CRT, like black depth and tearing (through running at 60Hz), but it's certainly quick enough to play some quick games on though. I've played UT2004 instagib deathmatch on it, GTR2, I'm playing GRAW at the moment. It's performed very well in all those.

i dont play crappy games like Ob.

I play UO, CoD2, RO and 2142 and they are all fine

great monitor

At work we used to use 22" Lacie Electron Blue CRT screens, now if those screens aren't on the top end of the 22" CRT shelf in that class then I don't know what is.

They were very nice screens but the major downside being that after an hour of usage your eyes begin to fatigue and your face starts to burn/ache. The exact same issue we had with the LG 795FT+ Super Flatron CRT and the Dell flat trinitron CRT.

This is a common problem with CRT screens and this issue does not exist on a NEC or Dell IPS TFT.
