Rude Awakening!

I find this 'Lag' thing really difficult to believe . When I see a target move on the PC it takes me 0.3s (typical reaction time) to start moving the mouse , the extra 0.06s caused by 'Lag' is less than the difference caused by a butterfly flapping its wings in China ;)

Tomrrow I'll be changing from my Samsung 171s (17" LCD) to a new 215TW so I may be back to edit this thread :o

:D

my reaction time is under 100ms easily so would make difference to me, anyhow texture lag is another thing i would hate thats why im staying with crt :) ive seen the best tft/lcd on the market and it still dont come close to a top crt.

I've read the article & watched the movie & don't dispute the fact of 'Lag' , what I have problems with is the difference the 60mS makes to my reaction times of 300mS. ie MY lag is 300 so what does the extra 60 do ? . As I said earlier I'm getting a 215TW tomorrow so I can compare it to my other 2 TFT's and see what happens :)

Fair enough, but it does still confuse your brain when sound and image aren't synched properly. As the article says it can stress your brain out if you hear something before you see it. And you can imagine when playing against someone with a CRT that those 70 ms would give them an advantage.

Also while reactions may be slow, your brain is still receiving and processing the information very quickly, even if your nerves and muscles can't keep up.

I've got LCD and CRT here and I've tried playing FPS games in clone mode. I can perceive the lag when I move the mouse to when the screen responds on the TFT but not on the CRT.

The picture on the CRT is also a damn site nicer but we'll leave that for another thread :D I only use the CRT for gaming, when browsing the web I much prefer the LCD and I'll be buying a new widescreen LCD next week. Whether it replaces my current LCD or the CRT, we'll have to wait and see.

Well just recieved my new Samsung 215TW and was amazed at how it looked. Unfortunately the first thing I noticed was the insane mouse lag. I gave it a few hours to settle down and also installed the Logitech drivers, to no avail. I will be sending this back tomorrow. it's a shame because it's one of the most expensive units for a 21" WS, so am slightly surprised that something as negative as this could be allowed in a monitor which clearly would be used by gamers.

Slightly miffed

FYI I have a logitech mouse, ATI X800, and am using DVI mode, I might try VGA but that kinda defeats the point of buying one with a DVI slot :(

i use CRT and when i go to different people's houses i realy notice the lag it looks like there losing about 20% speed on games tis awful will never go to TFT until the tech is up to it.

cheers.

I have been forced to use a CRT again for the past two weeks, having built two extra PC's and kept the existing one.

I have a 17" CRT next to a 17" TFT, and the difference is like night and day.

Thank god I have a 2407 coming tomorrow so the CRT can go back in the loft. For the sake of a few hundred ms of lag (that I can't notice), I will take the TFT anyday.

How long before buying a CRT is impossible? In 10 years time secondhand CRTs could be going for thousands of pounds on ebay :p Time to stock up and buy all the CRTs i can find!

Yes, because that's exactly what happened with black and white TVs :p

I had a samsung 172x and a dell 2005, both of which you could "tell" that they were TFT monitors. Now with my eizo things are MUCH better. It's as if I'm using a CRT, really nice.

I'm asuming not all TFT's have the same Input Lag, but when it's something so noticable that you start to install new mouse drivers, new video drivers then it's an issue. The 215TW seems to be one of the worse from reading the web, shame I didn't understand what 'Input Lag' was before I purchased it. Don't forget on a WS the input lag is made worse because of the width of the screen. I understand that a few hundred ms of lag might mean nothing to you but to me it's not a situation that you can work around, try walking to work with 200ms lag ;)

I'm building a PC today/tomorrow with 2 x 7800 PCI/SLI cards, probaly won't make any difference, and using VGA mode was just as bad.

When you say mouse lag, do you notice it moving your mouse around on the desktop, or is it just in games?

Fair enough, but unless you've actually used a Samsung 215TW then you're just guessing at how bad the problem is and whether you would notice it. It could be really bad and make the screen horrible to use even for an average user. Input lag does vary hugely. It could be five to ten times worse on a 215TW than any of the TFTs you've used.

Reading this thread has made me seriously consider getting an LCD. Was going to get Belinea 2225S1W 22" but dunno now :/

Only got 4 CRT's in use at the moment. :D

Compaq 17" on the servers
2x Sony 24" on the desk
1x IBM 21" on the desk

Yes - my desk is custom made and reinforced with angled steel. :D

I'm surprised by how cheap the Sony 24"'s are now. Looking at around £100 if you pick them up. I paid well over that. :(

There is no doubting that CRTs are still the ultimate display for gaming, in terms of smoothness etc. But since my computer time these days equates to only about 30% playing games then the benefits of TFTs with the other 70% is a better deal. Crisper, cleaner display for windows apps etc...

Ideally, if I was still a hardcore gamer I'd have both sitting on my desk...but desk space..ah, thats another advantage TFTs have
