Australia just got saved by the referee, shoulder charge to the head 5 m out. Knock on against fiji the call....

Australia should have been playing 50 mins against 14.

The rolling maul will be the tournament's weapon of choice
 
So far it looks like the vaguely decent France has shown up. Never a sure thing which version of them will appear at a tournament. Their offload game is strong, Ntamack is kicking well (his very first kick of the match aside), Penaud is giving defenders real problems.

Discipline has been an issue in the match so far - for both sides. France in particular were starting to give away too many penalties in quick succession towards the end of that half. Fortunately the refereeing has been benevolent enough so far for cards to not get flashed.

And now Ntamack loses his kicking game right at the wrong moment. 2 minutes to go, a long penalty for Argentina...and it's wide. Let off for France. One more phase of play.

Well...they made that harder than it needed to be. And now the punch-up starts.

I've got to say, it's nice to hear the 'World In Union' snippets on the broadcasts sung by someone vaguely competent. That version Paloma Faith did at the last World Cup was bloody awful...
 
Argentina are no mugs, if they could look after the ball a bit better they'd have nicked that.

Rightly a bit aggrieved at the France 6 interfering with the 9, did a good job of making it look accidental though
 
Pretty good game yeah. Classic all blacks first half, just about cling on defending for for 20 minutes then immediately score two quick tries on the break.

SA coming back into it now though...
 
So if Ireland win the group then we play one of those two.

Damn Sinckler has the vision of a 10 sometimes, that casual deep pass to Tuilagi motoring up.

Tonga playing an effective pressure game so far. We need to get it out wide more and use Daly/Watson.
 
NZ looking good (unfortunately)! Their continuity and decision making is phenomenal.

I though England were overall poor, with far too many handling errors and poor decisions. It was a poor game to watch, and the ball was out of play so much I was starting to get bored... to me, this is a real difference compared to NZ, who keep hold of the ball so much more. Slade doesn't look remotely fit, but Tuilagi and Joseph both looking red hot.

I was fuming about that tackle Hodge made agains Fiji... clear high tackle with the shoulder, the simple fact that the Fijian needed a HIA straight after warranted a better look by the third official. A red card there would have transformed the game, with Fiji possibly getting a try rather than Australia clearing their lines, and the next Australia try by Hodge would not have happened... I was really routing for Fiji to win after their brilliant start to the game.

What happened with Scotland!?!?!?!?
 
Not understanding why so many people are so down on the England performance. We never looked like losing, prevented them getting a single try, and even blew some opportunities on the way. Yes the blown chances weren't great, but we need to peak 2 weeks after that game, not for it.

England didn't look even remotely cohesive for most of the game, and showed little adventure... I agree they didn't need to peak for the opening game, but I think everyone would have liked them to look close to peak considering the World Cup is now underway, especially considering the opposition would be considered to be tier 2.
