First a full explanation for non wow players:

People who have played MMOs will know of "twinking", a process where you power up a low level character far beyond what would normally be possible.

Blizzard stopped this by making it so you gain experience in battlegrounds, meaning twinks will eventually be kicked out.

To get around this, I bought a new account for £5 and didn't put any expansions on, which means I can't get past level 60. I then made a Paladin and got it to level 60 in a few hours using my main character. I activated the 10 day burning crusade trial and got all the gear which has sockets.

This results in a character that is insanely overpowered, way beyond any regular twink, because you can stuff your gear full of level 80 epic gems. I can two shot someone in full raid epics.

Result? Wiping their entire raid and taking the horde base in Alterac Valley solo :D Most of these guys who get wiped out are level 60, the shaman is even 61.

The games not this broken normally, and certainly not at max level where it actually matters, this is an extreme example :p Blizzard will probably make gems have a level requirement in Cataclysm.

we gang up on them

They do too, gem twinks are too broken though, they can't do anything. :p

The concept of the modern crap MMO, take something like UO (yes a blast from the past) and skill was just as important, if not more so, than items

Obviously 99.9% of people prefer it this way. Does that make it crap? Oh well. There's always darkfall.

How can you say 99.9% prefer it? There simply hasn't been a credible alternative (UO is dated), and WoW has the sheep mentality advantage as well

Struggling to see where the fun comes in tbh. You surely cant get much satisfaction from beating people who dont have a chance against you whilst also making BG's involving yourself a lot less fun for the players involved. Seems like a lose-lose situation to me .

I dont even vaguely buy that, there is no way sheep mentality could spread the game across continents and keep it going this long (with no end in sight). They have a hook and that hook may well be relatively easy gameplay but companies have offered games with 'challenge' where you can be whacked and robbed of all your kit if you dont twitch fast enough and its no fun for noobs in their starter kit. Given the costs of developing an mmo, the massive expectation of profit, the real need to max subs, there never will be a ground breaking credible alternative until a cheap way of making mmo's happens. ie never.
