It’s true that the PS3 doesn’t offer PS2 backward compatibility any longer. But the feature could be returning to the console through Sony’s rumored cloud deal with Gaikai. PS2 along with PS1 games would be stream able. It would include first-party titles and third-parties would have the option to make their own old classics available.

what do you guys think?

Don't think sony will bother cloud gaming would be poor on most people's net connections, i didn't think much of onlive.
PS2 and PS1 games can be downloaded on to any ps3 already.

Gaikai works pretty well - try out some demo's. I don't have the best net connection for latency but still impressed, I imagine will perform much better on older console games.

What makes you think it well perform any different to newer games? It will be identical as the huge input lag has nothing to do with processing power. This will work well for really slow single player games which conveniently makes up the majority of the ps1/ps2 library.

You (partly) answered your own question ;p I was just thinking that games designed for controllers can be much more forgiving compared to the keyboard & mouse alternative that pc's use and the lag / latency issues should hopefully be less noticeable. Happy to be proven wrong though :)

Sounds like a money grab to me tbh.

If you take VITA as an example, they don't seem to be in a rush to enable PS1 compatibility as I doubt there is much money in it for them. I imagine a lot pf VITA owners already own the PS1 games digitally from PSN so once it gets enabled on VITA there is no extra money to be gained from a lot of users. Also a lot of the PS1 games have already been given away free to PS+.

By releasing a cloud streaming version instead they will want people to pay again for things they already own.

For PS3 users, you could probably buy 2nd hand PS2 games for sub £5 if they enabled some sort of software emulator, and none of that money would go to Sony. Again, if you are made to stream them via Gaikai they will charge you more.

It is often touted that licensing and rights are the reasons we don't get many PS1/PS2 games digitally or remakes. Not sure how streaming would resolve that issue.

I can understand why Sony removed the backwards compatability in the first place.

As the majority of PS2 games people would buy to use on the PS3 would be second hand, none of that money goes to Sony. But, if they can control it through PSN or Gaikai then they start earning from their back catalogue again.

Surely PS2/PS1 games would run well on a cloud anyway? They're hardly number crunching monsters by today's standards.

I think this could work well if

A) Sony make sure a large library is available for Gaikai asap

B) The price is right.

A fair point.
