Rumour has had it that they were going to play every festival for the last 14 years...

Thanks for that constructive comment, but please remember that the Reading festival sits in the dates they have chosen for the European leg of their new tour.

Thing is, do you want to see them at a festival where 80% of the people won't have a clue who they are and see Tool play a short set without their full lighting/screen setup or a soundcheck?

Indeed, I'd much rather see them in a proper concert hall. Tool just don't seem like a festival band to me. Much the same as Sigur Ros, and a whole host of other bands. If a band is as musically intense as Tool or Sigur Ros, a festival is not the place to see them.

I'd do both

You live in England ;) I'm not going to pay £200+ to come over for Reading again. Didn't enjoy it in 2003 as the lineup was weak and unlike Glasto there's not much else to do other than get hammered when the bands suck.

If I was living in England I'd be tempted with a day ticket but even then, Tool aren't a festival band. The same way I wouldn't want to see QOTSA in an arena.

This is true, at festivals people are usually after cheese and the atmosphere suffers even if the quality of performance doesn't.
