Hi there I am not sure if this is a rumour or just someone talking who is telling me something they heard ( if that makes sense !) anyway i was talking today to a guy at my University where i work ,hes in the P.C dept ,and he said that the new Core 2 Duo CPU'S don,t like a lot of the software ,and were built with Windows Vista in mind ,hence they won,t like a lot of the older software thats out ,anyone know more about this .

What a load of crap & this guy works in I.T  Sounds like he ain't got a clue what he's on about

Yeah made me think too ! whats worse hes got a ****** Degree in the thing !! total crazy ! hope he doesn,t tell to many people this or Intel will be sending him a nice  letter !

woops !

Sure do mate ;) See sig
Woops Mate sorry should put me eye balls in ha ! so i take it you think that the E6600 even if not clocked would beat any AMD CPU ?

x86 and x64 code is x86 and x64 code, i cannot see any reason why a conroe would fail to run older software poorly. Sounds like totaly BS imo :)

right

Thanks for all your comments ,think this guy will be getting an ear bashing later ! can,t see why Intel would develop a new CPU knowing that Windows was going to release Vista ,seems they would be teaming up with them or at least making sure a CPU going for £200.00 + would work !

Some (old and new-er) apps can be a bit of a pain to get working properly with a dual core CPU but whether Vista will handle that any better I'm not sure.

ummmmmmmmm

So still worth going with Intel over AMD then ? i,m with AMD at present ,but just wonder if its all hype regarding this Core 2 Duo CPU ? is it a lot of a difference over 64 X2 amd ? as i,m not into overclocking ..

, no question about it :)

It has nothing to do with hype, when it was released (and now to a lesser degree) Core 2 Duo was a massive leap over the Pentium 4 and both faster and cheaper (that is the lesser degree part, AMD cut prices pretty heavily) than the Athlon X2 equivalents (it also overclocks like a rabid hell beast). There are LOADS of reviews and benchmarks on the net that prove this fact and I'm not going to work google to prove it (you can do that yourself :p)

At the lower end there isn't so much in it at stock but especially with the cheaper C2D compatible motherboards available now (at release it was mostly expensive mobos) there is just no reason to go AM2, they don't even hold up on power consumption and heat output (the P4 Prescotts and earlier dual cores were horrible) as Core 2 Duo is so power efficient.

Id like to know exacly what he said and not your take on it.

The majority of older software is not multithreaded meaning it can only take use of a single core, that doesnt mean core 2 dual wont do well with it, but its not optimized for it newer software vista included will handle multicpu systems more effiently.

He obviously doesn't know what he is talking about, this is a growing problem with people who work in this area of computing, they do a course from an agency then think they know it, if they don't they bs and say that they read it somewhere if they are wrong.

You should read up on it and then tell him why he is wrong next time you talk about it.
