"Hey everyone,

It’s been over nine years since a rag-tag team of 17 developers helped open Runic Games. We’ve been so lucky for the community that has supported us and made us successful. Thanks to that support, we have had the chance to meet and work with the best people in the world. Our team here at Runic has released three successful games, and over that time we have seen many changes; team members got married, kids were born, but the most important thing is that we have become a family.

I’m sorry to say that today will be Runic’s last day open. Our focus is on our family here, and helping them find a new place to call home. If you are in games and looking for some of the best talent in the industry, please email [email protected].

For those that love the Torchlight series, there will be some news coming. And for all our fans, our community and multiplayer services will keep running even after the studio's lights go off.

It has been an amazing experience. To my family here at Runic, I know we won’t be far from each other, and I’ll miss seeing you all every week.

You haven’t heard the last of us,

Marsh Lefler
Studio Head"

"Well it wasn't our idea"

Wonder what the upcoming news is, but hopefully, whatever it is, it'll include a fix for TorchlightII, because you need to log into their servers to play online. Sure, they've said they'd keep things online, but for how long? Surely they'd not want to spend money on something when the firm itself will no longer exist...

Liked them both too. Even if I got stuck with someone being a tank that struggled to tank & I kept dying :p
Guess problem of no tank abilities made that trickier though.
At least we've got Grim Dawn to replace it, although would've still liked a third Torchlight game.

Just checked, servers for online connecting still up & running, for now.

Someone just said on steam to me "I guess HOB didn't do too well".

I'd completely forgotten that game existed, have barely heard anything about it too. Guess that hurt them a bit, if they didn't get it well known.
Shame though.

HOB is a niche, 'art' game, I've no idea why they made it, these games rarely sell well. They should have used the engine to make a 90s style RPG such as Silver, with less focus on grinding n more on exploration/questing/story.

It sounds like Perfect World dissolved them, as they closed Runic and a huge chunk of Motiga yesterday. If it's like Motiga then I'd imagine Torchlight will get continued support but it'll go to Perfect World as developers and publishers, rather than Runic being involved who instead just get laid off. Hope they all get new jobs very quickly as they are awesome.

+1

Torchlight was brilliant, and Torchlight 2 was even better. I know they got bored and wanted to do art/niche with Hob, but if they'd done Torchlight 3 they would still be open. It's all people wanted and it's what people loved.

Torchlight one was a great game and I actually cited it in my University work. Torchlight 2 I loved and recently completed a few times over again. It has its annoyances, but nothing that a 3rd game couldn't build upon.

When I saw HOB a while ago being developed instead of Torchlight 3 I thought this might happen. Shame.
