Running 20fps on PS2 with a 280x?

The title says it all really. Just downloaded MSI afterburner and my framerate is hovering around 20 when playing PlanetSide 2 on ultra/high. This is a new build that I got running yesterday, and looking at benchmarks of the 280x it looks like my card is somewhat lacking.

Specs:

FX6300 (stock)
Sapphire Radeon Dual-x 280x 3gb OC Edition (stock)
Kingston Hyper-x 1866mhz Ram (stock)
Gigabyte 970a-U3DP Mobo
Corsair Builder series 600W
Crucial MX100 256gb SSD

I downloaded Catalyst Control Center and I think I'm upto date, driver wise. But I'll check as I tried downloading the driver but it just installed the control center instead.

Obviously not too happy when I'm seeing people get 60+fps, so any help would be greatly appreciated. At the time I recorded the framerate I had Steam, Chrome and HWMonitor running. Don't think closing them would have made much of a difference, performance wise.

Thanks, adam. ;)

The cpu as above is most likely causing you problems. I can't remember my settings when i played the game but my fps was decent.

First port of call is to get your cpu overclocked.

Yeah, I think CPU is very important in PS2.
Although Humbug did say he got averages of at least 100fps using his FX-8350 in response to suggestions that the FX chips held back performance.

Although I think he did (Richard Huddy stylee) correct that a little later when asked for proof that wasn't standing around looking at an empty screen and said it was lower (around 60fps or so I think, so really close to his 100fps earlier statement).

In short, not sure if it's the CPU or not. Maybe try overclocking it? (I think Humbug's 8350 might have been OC'd).

Here

And later, here, although still good fps it seems.

It's the CPU, overclock it.
Wouldn't have paired a 6300 with an R9 280X either tbh.

I did. Not all of us can afford intel unfortunately. ;)

I appreciate what you guys are saying, but 20fps? Surely not?

Before overclocking anything I want to make sure it's not a software issue. I can see myself creating more problems if I start OC'ing.

Went on AMD and it advised me to download the following.

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows 8.1 - 64#amd-catalyst-packages

Version: 14.4

My current version is 14.1.

On the link it says to uninstall drivers and to delete the installation files before downloading the new one. Now does this mean delete the whole CCC using add/remove programs? And do I delete every file relating to it?

Updating drivers may help. Most people here use DDU to uninstall their drivers (some uninstall via control panel first, then run DDU).

Don't use DDU if your running and AMD cpu as I think it removes all AMD drivers. What cpu cooler do you have?

Thanks for the catch. Think I'll just get rid manually then. So scared of messing things up. No idea where to find the 14.1 driver .. going to have a rummage around now. As for the cooler, it's cack .. running AMD stock. So even if I wanted to, I can't OC.

ive got the same cpu and gpu my cpu is at 4.6 and ive never see the fps below 50/60 fps in ps2 just overclock it.

Planetside 2 only uses two cores as far as I can find, so unfortunately you're a bit screwed. The 6300 is lacking in IPC so pretty much all you can do is clock it up as high as it will go and hope for the best.

If PS2 is a game you play frequently, might be worth looking at sending the motherboard and processor back, paying the restocking fee and going for one of those unlocked Pentiums. With any luck the extra cost will be minimal since a G3258 + motherboard retails for slightly less than a 6300 + motherboard, with the G3258 having far superior performance in lightly-threaded tasks.

Just like you in the CPU thread with settler and myself talking and you do not try you are a Troll.

(note to himself, remember to log in after running Ccleaner to now see Trolls on ignore).

Christ... Do you really think people here can't see you for what you are and that inventing your own truth to win 'arguments' just makes you look like an even bigger ****?

Love the excuses for still pretending that you have me on ignore too. Once again, fingers in ears and lalalalala time...

I get what you're saying bud, I think the same applies to Starcraft 2. Runs on dual core.

I realize that core for core intel are far superior, and that many games utilize no more than 2 to 4 cores. But I'm happy. BF4 utilizes them all and that's what I'll be playing mainly, played an hour of PS2 yesterday, and not sure if i'm into it or not. Then again this is the very first time I've played a shooter on PC, so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks everyone. I just did an express uninstall on CCC and then downloaded the newer version. problem solved. Only thing is, now I can't view any system information on the newer CCC. Goddamnit.

Enough. Touches 55 when it's just me on screen. 30+ when it's me and my teammates. 22-30 when the battle's on.

Happier, no where near as choppy. Too bad I suck.

PlanetSide 2 is very CPU intensive, in the biggest battles with all settings maxed at 1440p even with a 4770k @ 4.6 and 2 780s I get drops into the low 30s (CPU bound). Incredibly intensive game when there is a huge battle with lots going on.
