Hi,

Recently my car has been running very hot, and working through coolant - I'm suspecting that there's a problem with the thermostat. I'm going to take it out and replace it.

Are there any problems with running a car without a thermostat?

cheers :)

yeah could run too cold, afaik with no stat all the water goes through the rad all the time. In this weather I doubt it would cause an issue though.

I had a Ford Sierra once that had a busted thermostat, but the meter was stuck in de middle position :o

Long drive was fine until there was a traffic jam and a few minutes later the cap of the cooling fluid blew off bursting hot coolant everywhere :(

I guess you need to find out if the cooling on your car is working full speed all the time or the fan on the radiator isn't working at all.

Less pressure in the block though as there no restriction on the water flow which drives the coolant jacket boiling point up.

You could end up with issues of water boiling and causing airlocks, high MPG as the engine will be overcooled and no end of other issues.

Replace the thermoastat rather than remove, a blocked radiator core could be a issue if its ran weak antifreeze/corrosion inhibitor so try back flushing it with a hose and see what comes out.

Low MPG you mean

Running no 'stat will be a lot better than a blocked 'stat in this weather, but they don't cost a lot so just replace it.

take the stat out.. and drill a hole or two in the edge of it.. say.. 1cm across.. lots of mini owners that have heat problems do this... allows some of the coolant to flow without the stat being open :)

RiPz, it should have a bypass to allow a trickle through by standard anyway. All the Triumphs do, anyway......It's critical to have some flow of coolant, even when cold. It usually looks like a little brass dongle sitting in a small hole.
