Running a Q9450 advice...

Hi there I recently bought a new system with a Q9450.
Not overclocking since I'm not confident enough to do that yet but I have just upped the multiplier from 6 to 8 so I can acheive the processor's full potential.
On doing this my BIOS gave me a warning saying this will reduce processor life...is this something to be worried about?
Also Everest says the cores are all running at between 56 and 59 degrees...is this healthy? sounds quite high to me.
Any replies much appreciated!

Its a Gigabyte GS4 DDR2 motherboard and I only installed and updated it last week so I assume it has the latest BIOS.
Realtemp says between 46 and 53 degrees so that has made me feel a bit better...should I be comfortable with that?
And should I be worried about the processor lifetime with the higher multiplier?
Thanks

The temps are abit high for idle, but what are your load temps like and are you using the stock cooler?.

Well i don't know why you had to change the multiplier from 6 to 8, since 8 is the default, so it shouldn't cause any problems. Are you sure the latest BIOS says it's fully compatible for 45nm quads?

Temps are very high for idle for a Q9450. Are you sure the cooler is seated properly. And as mentioned, which BIOS version are you running?

The x8 multi won't make any difference, but keep Speedstep/C1E/EIST enabled.

My Xeon X3350 (a Q9450 in different clothes) does about 25c idle at stock. Granted, it's been lapped and is under a D-Tek Fuzion, but still, your 53c sounds a bit hot. Cooler? Sure it's mounted correctly? What paste/how did you apply it (if you did).

You won't be able to up the multiplier as it's not an Extreme Edition CPU - default is 8x, the only reason it will change is because of SpeedStep.

your 53c sounds a bit hot
Sounds hot for load temp let alone idle.

jac705: Maybe try and reseat the cooler? perhaps you didn't install it correctly? Also you could also try some under-volting, that will bring your temps down and will be ideal if your not overclocking.

Thanks for the feedback so far.
I ordered some arctic silver 5 today so hopefully this helps!
Tryed reseating the heatsink but only changed the temp by about 2 degrees...
Is it worth investing in a new CPU cooler? and if so what would people recommend? I'm willing to spend the money if it will help prolong system life and increase performance.
Thanks

The stock heatsink *should* be fine with a non-overclocked Q9450.

Have you got much air flowing through the case?

Its an Akasa Mirage so it's more than big enough and the rest stays at about 25 degrees (except my 8800 GTX).
I have also tried it without the covers on the case and this didn't help the CPU temp.

The arctic 5 lowered it to about 47 degrees idle but thats still not great.
Any ideas?
Stock heatsink is definitely in place properly and there is more than enough air flow in the case.
Thanks

One strip across the centre of the heatplate as per the arctic online instructions.
Been reading online that realtemp may not be too accurate and I should trust the bios better...any truth in this?

Update: BIOS says CPU tempterature is 32 degrees
