I'm after a GPS watch for around £150 that doesn't look like I'm running with a wheelie bin lid attached to my arm.

Doesn't have to be a heart rate monitor, just speed and distance.

The forerunner 305 looks decent enough but like I said is huge.

Any recommendations?

the 305 is reasonably big but you don't notice it when running with it, you can at least see the screen. You may need to look toward the newer garmins but will probably have to up your budget a little.

I've got an older Garmin 205 and thought it might be too big - but actually it's not bad at all and I am not exactly blessed with meaty forearms/wrists.
They are great bits of kit - enjoy. :)

Agree with the above whilst the 305 may appear huge it's not that big on. The 110 is fairly basic, but the 305 gives you a lot more. If you're likely to do a lot of running in the future and look to mix up your running; slow, speed etc. then the 305 is the way to go.

From what I can see the 110 will simply give you pace, distance, time & HR readouts. The 305 gives these, alerts you if above/below set target pace/HR, allows you to program multipaced training sessions, race against a virtual partner and much much all valuable if taking your running seriously.

How accurate are these things?

I know my phone can be quite a way off.

Problem with mobiles is they tend to be setup to rely heavily on A-GPS (Assisted-GPS) which triangulates based on cell towers as opposed to using dedicated GPS chips which you get in the Garmins etc.

The 305 is a good one to go for, bought on for the GF at christmas as un upgrade to her old (non GPS) watch.

Finds it far more usful, planning her runs and timings with it etc and it alerting when behind/cleared a mile etc is helping her improve quite a bit.

Also, when you start a run you can mark it as a home point - handy for when the running club did a unfamiliar route - she took a wrong turning and managed to get back ok by using the watch (doesnt run in home town, so unfamiliar with the streets)

Hmmm might just go for the 305 then, even though I like the look of the smaller face better the 305 is cheaper and if I don't get on with it sell it on.

Thanks for all the replies.

Now I need a decent set of headphones that don't fall out :D

wait for the new nike+ and tomtom GPS it looks amazing is light and very simple, no fancy stuff, comes around april

Touch screen; anyone who owns a Garmin 405 will know what a right royal pain that can be.

Insufficient data on screen at once. I know it probably scrolls, but I dont want to run looking at my watch, I want to glance at it and see what I want to see.

This weekend I ordered a Garmin Forerunner 305. Can't wait for it to arrive. Going to be really useful for running training, as well as mapping hikes/treks. Also bought a cheap little Duracell usb charger which can apparently extend the battery life of the Garmin up to 36hours. :)

my 301 worked fine but if its cloudy or your in a built up area it can affect the signal . The garmin software works with google earth to

Dumb question but I can't find a youtube vid or image, but the heart rate monitor strap. Where exacly do you fit it, I presume the sensors are the ridge strips. Do you fit it so the part that says Garmin is in the middle of your chest?

Or does it go on your side with a sensor front and back?

I wear my Garmin strap with the Garmin logo (the electronic part) in the middle of my chest, just beneath my moobs :D

If you are new to the world of Garmin Forerunners / Edge, DC Rainmakers blog has loads of good stuff to get the most out of it.
