Got two 7970's which I killed a few weeks back (Here). I want to put them into my current rig to test them but don't want to go through refilling the loop to then have to drain it if they don't work.

Basic procedure is drain current loop, remove 5970, put 7970's in, power on to test if I get a POST screen, power off soon as I know if they are dead or not.

Total on time should be under 1 minute without water.

I personally would imagine with no water temps will rise extremely fast and if they weren't broke before they would be after trying this, don't risk it for the sake of being lazy.

I wouldn't even drain the loop. Remove 5970 and detach power cables but do not remove the tubes so do this very carefully. i.e. it stays fully connected to the loop, just not in the PCIE slot and not power connected. Then fit the 7970 but only if it still has a fitted block. If it has no block and no heatsink do not do this.

Yer I guess it is just laziness on my part. It won't be to hard to hook up the cards to the current loop, will just have to spend the time to do it :D

Thanks guys.

I meant no nastiness when I said don't be lazy it's a pita but sadly it's a part of watercooling, would have hated to see a thread on here of u overheating and destroying two cards that could have potentially been fine(I can only imagine how upset I would be about this, for me it would be a lot of money I couldn't afford to lose let alone beating myself up about it!),I love tinkering and I'm trying to make a excuse to rip my loop apart and give it a full drain and clean! God I'm sad!:p:D maybe I should come do yours to remove my itch:D hahaha

Done it loads of times, just to the post screen. It won't kill them, not with the block on. It's a big lump of copper, it'll absorb enough heat for a quick test.
