Hi there, just wondered if anyone knows how long a clutch should be run in for? I was told to drive my car gently for 500 miles but its quite hard to resist (although i have managed so far).

Can you tell if you have a good surface on the clutch by pedal feel?

Cheers.

just avoid drag racing starts and slipping the clutch on hill starts ect for a couple of hundred miles.also avoid quick downchanges where you let the clucth up real fast

It usually is around 300-500 miles - for me it would be 500 miles off boost - i.e. up to 3k RPM (which sucks a bit) when I get a new clutch.

It's pretty important to break in the clutch because it ensure the disc, pressure plate and flywheel all make full surface contact. It's also a chance for the friction material to experience normal heat cycles.

It also depends on the type of driving you do - town driving is more intensive on the clutch, it's better to do as much mixed driving as possible withough putting too much torque and power through it. I reckon after 300 or so you can start being a little less careful but I'd still take it easy.

Thanks for the info. I've done 300 miles on it now just tickling the throttle. Only gone on boost a couple of times when i needed to and only up to 3000rpm. I have been shifting down but again only slowly and at low rpm.

I've always just slapped the clutch in then ragged it! Not had any problems so far... didn't realise you had to run them in.

Oooopsy daisy :P I didnt wear my clutch in at all I hope it will hold up under the pavement shredding torque of my beast.

/me salutes. You sir must have the patience of a saint :D! I couldn't go 5 miles off boost in my girl. I have to admit that I haven't been one for running clutches in but when I go through 1 a year on average I don't think I should bother ;).

Interesting stuff. I've never really run in a clutch until I got my 6 puck race clutch for the mr2. The run in procedure as per the booklet stated putting the car in 5th and side stepping the clutch! :D

Freefaller,

Abit of topic but I noticed your 0-60 times on the record thread. I was wondering was that stock or if not, what have you had done to it?
