Running in a Diesel Engine from new

my mate has purchased a brand new VW Scirocco 2.0 TDi GT DSG Bluemotion

Hes not got it yet as it on order and is unsure on how to run the engine in from new when he gets it

is it at all needed nowadays on these new modern engines?
