Is there an FAQ on this?

I've seen at my parents they have an adaptor which allows them to run Sky from a power socket that goes through the earth cable to the router?

Are they effective?

I would like to do the same in my flat as I currently have 4 LAN cables trailing to different devices?

powerline adaptors are what you're looking for and yes you can have lots plugged in.

It's very effective, speeds vary a lot depending on your wiring.

You can plug a switch into an adaptor and connect multiple devices.

Nope, Hubs are slightly older tech, traffic is usually sent out on all ports rather than only the needed one(s), no decent address lookup/learning, all ports on the same collision domain and share the bandwidth over the ports so you wont get the full dedicated bandwidth on a per port basis.

switches use more advanced technology with regards to address learning, only send out traffic on the required ports so its not saturating the device, each port is on its own collision domain, and you get per-port duplex.

I would deffo go with a switch over a hub if you want decent performance.
