running laptop on another screen

Hi a friend has smashed the lcd on his laptop and hopes to run it through a secondary monitor (the rest of the laptop appears to be working.

I'm going to bring a spare monitor of mine over to him, but i've heard you need to enable the vga output to get this to work?

Is this true, and how can it be done if the screen is bust

With some laptops, and mine included there is normally a combination of buttons you press to switch between outputs on the keyboard.
On mine (Acer) press Fn + and some symbol there looks like two screens and a arrow.
