Running long CAT5E/6

We live in quite a large house, and it's three floors. I want to place the router at the master socket (as I sync nearer 24mibt there). I want to then run CAT5e/6 from there to 2 floors up. This would be, I estimate, around 30-40m perhaps.

Will this cause major degradation? Or will this be fine? Will CAT5e be fine with 1Gbps?

Maximum cable length is about 100m so you should be fine. I've used gig over Cat5e before without many problems, but if you can afford it go for cat6 to allow use of 10gig when it comes out.

thinks its 100 metres before you get degradation, should be fine, just wait for someone to confirm this.

might need to watch out for interference though

Thanks, I would do Wireless but everything I have tried Wireless will not get over 1500k/s, which is pointless if I can get more than that on my internet connection.

The best option (and cheapest) seems to just run the cat5e upstairs to a switch and connect my PCs in my room to it.

Up to 100m is spot on - stay away from mains cable runs and light fittings and you'll be fine.

While I'm a big fan of a nice tidy bit of cabling, have you considered using a powerline system to run your network over the household mains? It will seem a little pricey but takes about 5 minutes to install and just works - like a charm.

No drilling, hoovering, crimping or tracking walls required...

I love it...

If you were to use Cat6 you could get the 1Gbps line if you were interested in sharing files or gaming with house mates.

IIRC Cat5e will give you a 1Gb up to 25m then it will drop down to 100Mb. Just something to think about.

Properly installed Cat5e will give you 1Gbit up to the maximum length of the cable without any problems (thats the difference really between Cat5 and Cat5e).

No mate. Cat5e has a max length of 25m to support 1Gb

Well all Im going on is my lecture slides from last year in a module called WANs and LANs which read:

"1000Base-T (Gigabit Ethernet) requires Cat 5e or Cat 6
cable. It uses all 4 pairs and maximum distance is 25 m or
100m if using Cat 6."

I'll admit they could be wrong of course

Yup I have 2 runs of 30m Cat5e to my server and get gigabit. I would have gone cat6 but had to bury the cables and could only get my hands on cat5e in time. But it does the job fine so.

Ok I stand corrected, I will be emailing my lecturer.

How can I possibly be expected to face the big wide world of online forums when they give me this false info!

up to 90 metres for a direct main run from the medium to socket, which gives 10 metres spare for patch panels/switches/workstations.

100 Metres total for Gigabit speeds using Gigabit mediums.

If you are running it outisde it might be better to get cat5e/cat6 STP cable.

Not so much STP but armored, weather proof cable would be best.

To get the benefit of STP you have to earth everything which is a pain in the behind.
