I currently run a FreeNas server but would like to move it to the cloud. I was thinking about installing ownCloud which looks great but I would still need an off-site cloud server otherwise its a pointless exercise.

Maybe Amazon S3 might be a solution but it might end up being very expensive transferring in and out TBs of data.

All the meaningless talk of cloud aside, what do you actually want to achieve? Large amounts of storage online only? An online backup?

I do get confused about clouds lol. I want to get online access to my data and backup the same data. ATM I use Dropbox, Skydrive etc for some of my data but want to move way from those. I also use a NAS at home for my larger files.

Do you just want a web interface for accessing your files?

As above, do you actually want this data stored online or just backed up online, or just accessible over the internet?

Depending on the amount of data, what's wrong with just using Dropbox like you seem to already do?

Failing that, OwnCloud for the bulk will give you cloud-based-ish access to stuff when outside the local network, and then use Dropbox for stuff that needs backing up off-site - I have photos, videos etc pushed up to Dropbox for example.

Ive just started to use JOTTACLOUD, based in Norway so harder regulations on people getting to your data (why someone getting to my holiday snaps and music collection is important someone else i am yet to figure out though) Based up in the north so uses the environment to keep it all cool etc. Nice and cheap with a client for Andriod and Win environments.

Thinking of buying a VDS from vidahost, encrypting the drive (CentOS) and installing owncloud on it. Would this be straightforward to do in a VDS?

No point encrypting the drive, it achieves nothing in this context...

and even then, all you've managed to achieve is making yourself a more expensive, less reliable version of dropbox.
