running old programs on windows 7 64 bit?

Just a quickie, I have been passed a an old cd of software to put on a laptop windows 7 home premium 64bit. When I goto install it is comes up with "The program featured cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit version of windows"

Is there anyway of getting round this?

XP mode is stupidly easy to use. After all, it's a fully licenced copy of Windows XP

Microsoft will only give you the XP from that link if you have a copy of Win 7 Pro, or Ultimate. However, if you have a copy of XP, then you can use Oracle VM Virtual box with home premium.

Which only works with Pro or Enterprise/Ultimate (not Home Premium) so it won't work in this case anyway.

Can you not right click on the installer and choose to run in compatibility mode?
 
Its an educational bit of software called testbase. Which they have now updated to be a paid for online tool. But we have to original CD version, I have tried the right click compatibility mode and setting it to run as xp still same error?
 
16 bit apps DO NOT WORK at all with 64 bit windows, as they have dropped the support of it, that is why xp mode or virtual machines are there. compatibility mode won't work as there is no support for that architecture.
You will have to do one of 3 things
buy a copy of xp (not sold by manufacturers any more) and install into a VM
upgrade windows 7 to professional
not use the software
use linux in a vm and run the program using WINE if it is supported.
