Hi,

So my friend's board took a little bit of water damage and as a consequence RAM slots 3 & 4 no longer work, when we populate it with RAM the PC will not boot what so ever, I tried 4 different sticks in each RAM slot and the only 2 that work are 1 & 2, meaning it will populate 8GB but only run as Single channel.

What is the downfall of this, I put in 2 of the 4 sticks so the system used 8GB, everything somewhat seemed fine. Games were still running smooth, programs loaded as normal, wasn't much difference besides having 8GB instead of 16GB.

Are their any implications or issues that can occur with running the RAM this way?

He has bought a new board, however offered me the board for a second build if I can source a CPU and I'm interested as it's an ASUS Z68 GENE MATX and would beat what I currently have running in my second PC.

Any thoughts?

you'll lose performance running single channel vs dual channel

did you fully clear the cmos and check cpu socket for any damage?

CMOS was cleared for 24 hours. (Battery taken out).
CPU socket was also checked, no bent pins or issues, everything runs perfect unless those 2 slots are populated!

He said that liquid did hit the slots so it's possible that they've blown/gone from the liquid, however I don't know if the system was on at the time or off but I suspect it's the liquid damage.

You can use those slots just fine,Idk how much performance you'll lose in single channel vs dual channel but if you can't notice then I wouldn't worry

It could have blown some capacitors one's that affect ram slots,I've had that happen I had it repaired though, can't think whatelse would cause dead ram slots
