Running Vista as a VM

I wanted to install Vista as a virtual machine, using whatever software was most appropriate. Now I foolishly assumed that Virtual PC 2007 would be the best option as its still beta, but when I try to install it (Im running XP Home at the moment) it says the OS isnt supported. Is this cos I'm using XP Home? Could anyone suggest if it is possible to run Vista as a VM - I just dont want to go to the hassle of sticking my old hard-drive in just to see how Vista runs.
Cheers for any advice folks :)

I installed a few of the Vista betas in VMWare a while back on XP. I don't know if the RCs or RTM will install in it, but I don't see why not.

AH ok - so which of the VMWare software packages do i need to do this? Server? Player? (bearing in mind it has to be free....lol) :p

And thanks for the pointer per responsiveness, will bear it in mind - only want to have a quick look, tbh.

vmware server is 100% free, i downloaded and installed it few mins ago

I must agree - see here. So by using the VM Server software, i'll be able to try Vista under a host OS of XP Home? If so, thats ideal, thanks for the pointer! :)

Yea it should be fine. It's pretty much feature complete and they hope to make money from it by selling support.

This is all good, I shall bin Virtual PC 2007 beta, and download the VM Server doodad now. Thanks for the advice all :)

VMware workstation requires a license. What exactly are you using for free?

Yeah it requires a license, you fill in the form and they email you the key. Still free in my eyes.

It's one of the main reasons why MS made their Virtual Server free.

Its the VMware ESX server thats not free, although I thought only VMware Server was free and you still had to pay for Workstation
