A friend has an i5 with a 1050ti and 8gb of ram, when they're running around the world, the game keeps hitching for a couple of seconds every now and then, it seems to be mostly related to rustclient.exe accessing files under the steam directory, the hard drive is a 7200rpm 500gb drive and seems fine for everything else, the system isn't hitting the pagefile, can this hitching be minimized?

Good chance it's chewing through RAM, a lot of Unity games do. Get him to download memory cleaner, keep that running in the background and see how he gets on.

- Close all unnecessary programs.

- Open task manager and check any processes that are spiking memory or ram usage. Close what you can.

Try dropping settings and see if the problem persists.

I've got 8 gigs with a single 980, don't have those issues.

It seems to only happen on large 300 player servers?

I don't mean to be flippant but perhaps not play on those servers?

Perhaps its the drive accessing the data... If he can get his hands on a low capacity SSD perhaps he can try installing rust on it? It's still not the best optimised game out there, but mines on an SSD with a half decent rig and these days I very rarely get stutters.

Did he try any of my suggestions?

Yes, there were no real unnecessary processes other than discord, rust is using about 5.5gb.

When looking at the resource monitor or seems to stutter when it's accessing files under the steam workshop folder path.

He plays it on simple details which I assume is medium? Graphics card is only 40% utilised under task manager.

Maybe it is ram then... I find it weird because I always hear people using way more ram than me. Rust tends to use up to 3gb, and Tabbed browsing doesn't use much either.

Last time I played rust it had a memory leak, performance would slowly degrade until it would stutter. This was back in December though. Not played it since I started playing Ark tbh.
