Hi,

Me and some friends are entering the Rust to Rome Rally, only problem is that we dont have a car yet. So I thought that you guys might be able to help me spot some good choices. :D

Required specs:
< £250
MOT + TAX till end of June
Last till Rome (~2000miles after a few detours)
Big enough for 4 guys + camping stuff (So really looking at estates - 7 seaters etc)
Hopefully enough power to get 4 of us over the Alps!
As money is tight as close to Dundee as possible would be good

Or if any of you generous people have an old car needing removed for a small fee ;)

Will also use this thread to post up any pics and problems we have with the car / rally.

Thanks in advance for any help / links / offers.

why not scrap the whole idea and do a proper road trip with the money you would save going on this one? Cannot believe they actually charge you to take part!!!

Go on, do it. ;)

We are open to anything along as its big enough and looks like it will last the distance. Been looking at some retro 20year old Volvo's which might do the job, but very unsure about the auto boxes at that age.

Cant find any hondas (apart from civic LS) in our price range.

Old mini - maybe not!

Volvo 740 turbo was my chariot of choice for staples 2 naples a few years ago, for something that big it hauled ass (was boosting dangerously high mind :D )

Ate the clutch, rear main oil seal failed but is got there and back. Only broke down once due to an alternator belt which needed more tension.

BMW 525i would also be a good car, as would a vauxhall senator 3.0 - both did really well on the banger rally.

That Montego is AMAZING!!!! Remember the "Countryman" Estate lol.

A mate of mine did this last year in a 7 series had a great time and kept the car afterwards.
A different mate did a similar run in a Rover 600 (Honda engine of course)

Edit- just checked and his 7 series is in the 2009 pics.

Car has been bought. Ended up with a BMW 318 SE 1993 (pics to follow when I get a chance) Not as big as we were hoping (not a touring) but the condition and price won us over.

We got it for a bargain price and it seems in great condition. Only down side is we will need to MOT it before we leave, but I don't see it being much of a problem. A small patch for the exhaust and a change of rear tyres and I think we can get it through.

Think we will also be getting a write up inour local paper so that should help attract some sponsors. Any of you guys (OCUK work force? or anyone) fancy giveing us some money and we will let you stick what ever you want on our car?
