AMD has successfully taped out its first chip on the 40nm node. The chip is no less than the mid-range chip RV740 meant to succeed the RV730. Any changes in the specifications remains clouded at this time, but we will of course keep digging for them. RV740 is the guinea pig and what AMD learns from it will be used to make RV870, the chip also known as Lil' Dragon, even better. Stay tuned for more information on both. In the mean time we advice you not to expect that much from chips such as "RV775", "RV790" or any other similar names that might appear...

This sounds interesting. I bet since the chips will run so cool, the speeds will be utterly insane.

If I remember correctly going down to a smaller nanometer process allows you to boost clocks for some reason or other. Not sure if this is because they use less voltage.

40nm GPU holy **** I want one now to replace the 55nm HD4670! :o

I hope they totally nail down their power-play feature on these, it was a bit hit n miss on several different branded HD4670's I tested.

If they do implement a fully functional powerplay tech then this could be a killer graphics card for the casual gamer running an eco/lounge pc! :)

Although that Lil' Dragon sounds a bit more serious, can't wait!
