In the middle of January we reported for the first time that first samples of the RV770 successor, RV790, would be going around and that those would be tested with 750 MHz chip frequency and 900 MHz memory frequency(GDDR5) AMD-internal.
In another news article we informed you that AMD would have accelerated the Qimonda memory IDGV1G-05A1F1C-40X, which was already installed in the HD 4870, about 75 MHz.

Now the chip frequency of a RV790 sample could be raised from 750 to 850 MHz by increasing the power supply (1.30 instead of 1.24 volt). The memory runs with the already known 975 MHz. The stepping keeps the A11. The following list shows all rumors about RV790 samples up to now.

* 750/900 MHz @ 1,24 volt
* 750/975 MHz @ 1,24 volt
* 850/975 MHz @ 1,30 volt

Because of the still quite immense differences in this short time span you can conclude that AMD are searching for the final frequency themselves. We will keep you up-to-date, of course.

As we could also learn, the mentioned sample, which is exactly called RV790XT, will reach the market with the name HD 4970. So it goes with the Radeon series seamlessly.
The amount of computing units is still ambiguous. Neither is a launch date determined. But if no further stepping is necessary - the RV670 got into the market with the A11 stepping, too -, the planned launch in March 2009 could definitely work.

Wouldn't think it'd be too bad, considering this thing's supposedly being produced on a 40nm process. The fact it's only shipping at* 750MHz is a bit disappointing, though. Hopefully they'll make that up in other areas!

On another note, on VR-Zone, somebody posted a link to a European retailer listing a '5870 X2' for something like 600 euroes on pre order, there wasn't much in the way of specifications other than it apparently runs at 800MHz. Pinch of salt required, clearly.

*just what the article implies.
