RX 480 or Fury ?

Looking to have a small upgrade from my 290x as I only play games at 1080 but do notice some framerate drop.

A budget around £200, I figure it will probably be one of the above but is there any pitfalls to look out for with either ?

RX480 would be a downgrade, while the Fury would be an upgrade.

Really ? Made the assumption that the 480 would be faster than my 290x considering the age

I have a FuryX in my main PC and a RX480 8GB in my second PC. I went from a 290X 8GB to the FuryX and it improved minimums FPS @1440p which was very noticeable. The RX 480 is OK but given the choice between a Fury 4GB and a RX480 8GB for the same money, I would go with the fury. Games run better and for now 4GB is fine.

I imagine an RX480 is slightly faster than a 290X on the latest drivers now, especially at stock speeds. The DX12 performance should also be better surely? Fury is the next level up, but limited to 4GB ram.

Sounds like a Fury then as its the minimum, rather than maximum FPS that bothers me about my 290x,
Any better suggestions in the same price bracket ?

290x has also improved by a lot (you can just use the 390x to compare and subtract 2-3%).

480s not an upgrade from the 290s, 290 and up owners upgrade is Vega, sometime next year.

If you want to upgrade from a 290 and up now, then Nvidia is your only option, 1070 and up.

Fury would be an upgrade (not a big one, but an upgrade nonetheless).

I was getting better perfomance in Fallout4 with a RX480 than a FuryX at 1440p! AMDmatt gave an explanation as to the reason something changed somewhere or other.
