I have had a a rc 5700 xt for a while, that i bought second hand, and my sister has just built a pc for her son, using a 6650 xt from overclockers

which got me wondering, is a 5700xt enough to adequately run modern games.

for example, has any body played start field on one?

I play VR mostly, and so far it has been fine ( connected to a quest 2) but as always eventualy games need more than the card in your pc, am i there yet?

any opinions

I think resolution and desired refresh rate will be a big factor in that. Im running a 5700xt stil and I get 120 ish frames at 1440p BUT I don't play new titles or VR. I think it would do 1080p/60 about fine for modern titles. I'd be looking to upgrade if you want to run at more demanding specs. Aren't Nvidia cards better for VR?

They're very similar cards, so you probably answered your own question :D

For a more serious answer: at 1080p: absolutely. At 1440p: yeah, but moving towards not enough for AAA. At 4K: older games only.

Yeah i only play 1080, mostly because im old and smaller resolution makes me cry lol

I managed to get a smooth 30 FPS on my 6650xt paired with a 5700x cpu playing starfield at 1080 any higher it was a stutter fest

I don't play much AAA games anyway apart from new world if you can count that as a AAA game

Starfield at 1440p runs very nicely for me. I use hub optimised settings I think? With a modicum of compromise you won't have any issues unless other parts of the system aren't quite up to it. Naturally I want to buy a 7800xt now :D I can't comment on vr however

Given that the 5700xt doesn't have hardware support for DX 12 Ultimate, I wouldn't recommend it since we're now starting to see games launching that cannot run on the 5700xt because of it

I have a 5700 (no-XT) and play at 1440p.

Most games are fine. I play Starfield, Chivalry 2 etc. and get 100+ fps on high or ultra graphics. It's still a perfectly good gaming card for most uses. If you want to play cyberpunk at 4k with ray tracing, or flight simulator with everything on, it will struggle, but for most gaming, it's still a decent card.

Alan Wake seems like a bad example to me. So far it's the only (I think?) game with this type of system requirements, and it doesn't look that good.
Huge system requirements, to look like it does? No thanks.
I certainly wouldn't be moving away from a 5700XT, if I had one, because of it. :D

This has just reminded of the days in the dim and distant past when you used to go into an actual SHOP, pick up a BOX and look at the back to check whether your potatoe system could run it.

I vivdly remember looking at all the old Flight Sims like B-17 FF, F-15 Strike Eagle, Knights of the Sky, Thier Finest Hour, Falcon 4.0 (which came with a manual as thick as the Bible), F-117A Stealth Fighter...

:D

According to hardware unboxed's Steve and Tim, no one should have a 5700xt anymore because you could upgrade to the 6700xt for free

I remember Tim saying go out and get a 'free' 6700 XT in exchange for your 5700 XT back when its value was peaking. I checked, and based on used prices for my 5700 XT in the UK versus the cost of a new 6700 XT (when stock was available), the difference was still going to be about +£100-£200 for the 6700 XT, not including the bay fees, so hardly free. As both these cards were going for the better part of a grand, the risk of something going wrong / being scammed meant there were some big bucks at stake, not to mention the possibility of being left without a GPU during the big drought. (Also can't sell for profit in the Members Market, so that relatively safe option was out).

Fast forward and I don't think the extra ~30% performance of a 6700 XT would have made much difference to needing to upgrade when I did anyway. I really wouldn't like to be on anything less than the 7900 XT I now own for the resolutions I'm playing at today. At the time I sold my 5700 XT, I think the 6700 XT was only going for about £50-60 more used lol.
