Hi everyone,

the RX 7900GRE is starting to appear in some stores at similar prices to RX6950XT.
I know some reviews gave similar performances, which one would you buy?

Less than 50€, the only review I found so far gives 1-2 FPS difference between the two cards, although lower power consumption is not to be ignored.

For gaming it looks like 6950xt is the better choice, if used for productivity as well then the 7900gre is better. How long would the price difference cost to make up in electricity costs (assuming 6950xt is cheaper)? Can the 6950xt card be undervolted to perform the same but use less power. I’m sure some owners will be along soon to help out

On what do you base your gaming evaluation?

I want to stay in the 600€ range, which means 650€ tops. The GRE is just below 700 wich is already overstretching, the XT would be another 100€.
would you be willing to wait a bit - expecting price drops - have seen the 7900xtx in the wild for a good chunk less than launch - i expect the rest of the pack to steadily head south

Prices are bad right now because there's old tech to sell and new releases less than 2 weeks ago.

Not going to purchase for at least another month anyway, might do january the latest as my i7-3770k is starting to feel ancient and is due for a total system replacement.

Based on HUB's review I'd get the 7900 GRE, because even though it is slower, the difference in power consumption when gaming was ginormous (would like some more reviews to check this, computerbase.de have one here).

You also get the newer features of RDNA 3 and it might gain some ground with driver updates.

That said, it's not much faster than a 7800 XT and they should be more plentiful and I'd expect them to drop in price as old stock sells out.

Interesting, Tom's Hardware puts them pretty much on par, I wonder if there is any difference in gaming selection or testing methodology.

My bad, it was computerbase:

Ohhh.

Right, yeah, that looks weird.

I can't talk about HUB because he says it in words and I have no sound right now, but what computerbase have written seems like grounds for inconsistency, if they didn't re-test all their cards?

"ComputerBase has tested the Radeon RX 7900 GRE extensively over the past four days. The following test system was used.

The processor was switched to the fastest gaming CPU, the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D (factory setting), which runs on an Asus ROG Crosshair X670E Hero. 32 GB of memory (2 × 16 GB DDR5-6000, 30-38-38-96) is available to the processor. The operating system is Windows 11 22H2, including all available updates, installed on an NVMe SSD (PCIe 4.0). Resizable BAR is enabled on all graphics cards. As is usual with Windows 11 on modern systems with current BIOS versions, core isolation (VBS) plus memory integrity (HVCI) is automatically switched on. The power supply is the Asus ROG Thor Platinum II with 1,200 watts, which comes with a 12VHPWR plug that says “ I deliver 600 watts!”“ signaled. If the graphics card offers such a connection, it will be used accordingly."

Adrenalin 23.4.1 was used as a driver for all Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, and Adrenalin 23.4.2 was used for the RX 7000 models that were tested until May 9, 2023. The GeForce RTX 3000 products have the GeForce 531.41 installed, and the RTX 4000 cards tested until May 9, 2023 have the GeForce 531.68. Intel's Arc graphics cards tested through May 9, 2023 ran driver 4311.

The AMD Radeon RX 7600 was tested with the press driver 23.10.01.16, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE with the Adrenalin 23.7.2. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti ran with the GeForce 531.93, the GeForce RTX 4060 with the 536.20.

But in their conclusion they say this:

The Radeon RX 7900 GRE is ultimately exactly as fast as the Radeon RX 6950 XT, sometimes slightly slower and sometimes slightly faster.

With no mention that they changed CPU, which surely they would, or should, if they didn't retest the 6950 XT?

Kinda a moot point as the GRE is not available....
If anyone knows of availability, I'd be very interested!
IMHO the 7900 GRE really hits a sweet spot for price / performance / power
