If I play a game with afterburner closed its really quiet. However as soon as I open afterburner and play a game it goes really loud on some intensive games like cyberpunk.

It's important to keep afterburner on right ? else it could overheat ?

Sounds like you need to adjust the fan curve in afterburner. It may have defaulted to something you had previously installed. Does afterburner actually show you what your fan % is when in game? You should be able to see it using rivatuner with the OSD.

50% when on Forza 7, fairly quiet

I'll check cyberpunk later, usually the fan is ridiculously loud when playing cyberpunk and according to Radeon software, the GPU runs at 100% most the time on that game too. Not sure what fan speed is but it was quite high

The question is, do i actually need afterburner on whilst gaming ? As it makes the fan really loud on some games

The fan runs loud due to the fan curve setting and the high temperature the card is hitting during certain games.

set the curve to an acceptable level :)

what temperature is it hitting during games?

Ok. On Forza 7 without the afterburner app about 63degrees. With the app about 53 degrees.

On Cyberpunk about 73 degrees with the app on

The other option would be to run afterburner and manually set it a bit lower than what it would automatically be ?

Afterburner is trying to cool your card to a too low temp due to a too steep fan curve...the driver will let you card sit at about 80c with afterburner running but many of us would be uncomfortable with that if it can be avoided....70c is more comfortable...i have 580s mining and they sit at about 55c 24/7 but at low power settings.

If its sitting at 73c with the fans screaming away then the card really is working hard...which would be expected with said game.

Card can run up into the 90s it seems but 80c should be the max really...have you checked the dust buildup on it?

even a bit can make a big difference

It's as loud as it was the day I installed it. Silent when idle, acceptable for most games, but really loud on cyberpunk.
I clean my computer out regularly with an extra powerful electronic blowing device. Inside the case there is literally 0 dust.
