RX8 Running Costs

Cant be that bad surely, I was only a year older when I insured my car and it was a higher group

I thought we established that insurance group has little to do with the policy cost, its down to the accident profile built up against that car.

Yea its often repeated on here along with the usual mantra of 'I can insure a Jaguar XJR for less than a Corsa 1.2 Trip', but in my experience its all rubbish.

Every time I added a higher group car when playing quotes before getting my car, it went up. Every time I lowered the group, it went down a bit. A Corsa was cheap to insure. A Ferrari cost lots. A Group 18 BMW cost more than a Group 17 BMW.

The 'accident profile' stuff isn't half as critical as internet hearsay thinks it is. Otherwise why isnt the insurance on a new Focus RS free? If you'd have insured one in April it would have a blemish free record!

etc.

Group has very little to do with it in my opinion. It might have a bearing but it will not dictate whether you get insurance or not.

You insured a higher group car, but its a luxury saloon not an RX8.

When I was 21 with 3 years NCB I could not insure things lesser than an RX8. Some companies still wanted £900 to insure my S2000 but I managed to get a £500ish policy.

More power to you if you can insure an RX8 at 21 with 1 years NCB for that price, I merely expected it to be far higher.

best example i can find is that the insurance costs for an impreza were double the cost of the vectra for me.

so over £1800 more, but yet only one insurance group higher ?

its because the vectra is a rep mobile by and large, and there arent enough vectra VXRs on the road to make significant insurance claims.

As a result, the vectra slips under the radar, and this year with only 2 years NCB and a driving ban and recent claim.

costs only £900.

because for new cars they guess the likely insurance profile, probably using the IG and the claims on the last focus RS as a base.

Valid points but they don't always hold true, for example last year i could insure a F355 for cheaper than my Passat with the same insurance company, one is IG 14 iirc the other is clearly 20+.

Remember what happened back in the 80's with hot hatches, Golf GTI's / Novas / Asta GTE's / Cosworths, when people started to steal them the insurance premiums went through the roof due to these cars having a bad claim record.

For a new driver something like a Mondeo must cost less per year than a Clio or Saxo, interesting test to run perhaps.

Assuming you meant a 1.8 mondeo, it would have cost me £2500 to insure whereas my clio was £1400.

Depends a lot on where you live to how expensive/cheap the cars are for new drivers i think :p

I think its Fiesta diesel for you.

Ha-ha, no way! (Again though, I think the Mondeo is Group 18?)

Anyways, i'll let this die now.

I am considering a couple of other cars, i'll make a new thread tonight with the considerations and what I see as the positives/negatives or the cars along with the costs etc.

Thanks for your help all.
