Hi

I’ve just built a machine with a 1600 running on a Gigabyte AB350M. I’ve got the memory stable at 3066.

With the CPU settings at default in the BIOS I’ve seen that the CPU maxes out at 3.7 single core, and 3.4 across all cores. This surprised me a bit as I was expecting 3.6/3.2 instead.

I thought only the X CPUs did this automatic boost over the base clocks. Is this normal?

Cheers

Perfectly normal. The non X CPU's also appear to have a form of the XFR boost.

It seems that the X CPU's only real benefit is potentially higher top end overclock (ie you may get 4Ghz out of a 1600X but only 3.9Ghz out of a 1600) and better out of the box performance.

That’s great. Free performance.... This is the sort of thing that makes me like AMD as a company. No locking the non-X (K) chips to a fixed frequency. Can’t see Intel doing that sort of thing.

Glad they’re back in the game.

To be fair to Intel the i5 and upwards do boost in a similar manner to AMD chips (my old (locked) 4770s was 3.1 base, 3.9 boost with 3.5 across all cores).

Overclocking of course is a different matter...

I didn’t realise that. Interesting. Will have to see what my 4460 does when I get a chance. I always thought it was fixed to 3.2 so I never bothered looking into it much.

The 1600 and 1700 also have boost and XFR capbaility.

They both max out at 3.4ghz all cores and 3.75ghz on 2 cores.
