Ryzen "2" ?

Pardon my ignorance guys but i was under the impression that there would be a Ryzen + before Ryzen 2, has it turned out that the Zen+Apu was Ryzen+ all along and in April we will get proper Ryzen 2?

Ryzen 2 is a proper full on redesign of large parts of it (prob an increase to 6 cores per CCX as well?), Ryzen plus is the first one with some redesigned bits and a shrink.

The APUs are version 1 with a couple of minor changes, the new XFR setup and some cache changes. Nothing like the changes for Ryzen plus which will be a fair bit more.
So its
Ryzen 1
Ryzen 1+tweaks (thats the APUs)
Ryzen plus - Thats due in a couple of months, version 1 with some changes and a shrink.
Ryzen 2 which is due at the end of this year (doubt it) or early next which is big changes to 1+ (is this the one with starship, 48 core monster)
Ryzen 3, later next year - god like... prob huge... wont get a Christmas card from intel.

Or something like that.

No. These APUs are Raven Ridge and are basically 1st generation Zen cores with Vega IGPs on the same process as Summit Ridge (Ryzen). In April, Pinnacle Ridge ("Ryzen+") comes out, which are basically 1st generation Zen cores on a new 12 nm process (there might be minor architectural improvements, we don't know). Both Raven Ridge and Pinnacle Ridge are considered "second generation" in AMD's naming scheme.

Yes it's confusing.

Ah ok thanks guys, yeah confusing to say the least! Is it worth shooting at Ryzen + in april or waiting till Ryzen 2? Im just thinking if Ryzen + will be more memory friendly as thats what put me off the last iteration.

AMD's CPU's tend to be inexpensive and have long lasting Motherboard sockets

I remember being promised AM3 boards would support bulldozer...then that didnt really pan out. AM3+ might have been the same socket but that didnt matter a jot, i still would have needed a new motherboard. Doesnt matter now, anyway, we all know how bulldozer went.

Very helpful, thanks.

For some reason I though 2 was out sooner. I could do with an upgrade, to wait or not...

Except it isn't:p

Ryzen is the name of the processor, like Threadripper. AMD never stated that they will call their CPU's along with architecture name ZEN. In fact it's still probably gonna be called just Ryzen (with a new number like 2800). So it can be called Ryzen 2, Ryzen 2nd gen, Ryzen+, Ryzen and all of them can be correct.

What you wrote above is related to Zen cores, so Zen, Zen+, Zen2 etc and then this architecture is used in the series of cpus ryzen, TR, Epyc

Humbug, I'm surprised you didn't go for the Ryzen 7 given your use case. Do you think you'll get an 8 core Zen+ or Zen 2 next?
If it wasn't for ram prices i would have done, i probably will go for Zen+ 8 core if not defiantly Zen 2.

@humbug I came in to see the fighting that occurs when anything Ryzen is mentioned but I had to leave the thread disappointed :( You only got a couple of nibbles from @gavinh87 and he didn't really bite....you're losing your touch :p

You're confusing "Zen" and "Ryzen".
Pinnacle ridge is Zen+/Ryzen 2.

Zen 2 will have a different name (probably).

Doesnt matter now, anyway, we all know how Prescott went.

About as relevant.
Also:
Z270/Z370.

Try a little objective thought if this is your genuine point of view.

What?

The point was AMD don't 'tend to have longer lasting sockets then Intel's. I guess you missed that. That argument has been done to death and AMD have been just as bad as Intel in the past. Doesn't matter if the socket is the same if you still need a new chipset - end result is the same.

I don't how you could think that was a subjective post, lost me there. Subjective would be me pretending the sun shone out if Intel's backside.
