Hi

I've got a Ryzen 2700 @ stock paired with a 1080ti driving a 1440p 144hz panel.

Ryzen 2700
MSI Tomahawk B450
16gig Teamforce 3200 CL16 memory
EVGA 1080ti SC2

I used to game at 4K so this issue was not a problem as I would be GPU pretty much solidly, but since moving to 144hz at 1440p I average around 90-120fps at 1440p depending on the game. I remember reading some time ago reviewers/benchies saying you needed quicker than 4.1ghz (max boost of 2700) to get the best out of the 1080ti at 1440p and I know in certain situations I can get 144fps if I had a quicker CPU.

While I'd love to swap my 8 core with another 8 core I think in reality I'm probably not going to need one for gaming.

At the moment I'm mulling over getting a 3600 for around £150 on various sites or maxing my mobo out and going for a zen 3 chip, a 5600x, but i'm not sure if that would be overkill for my GPU. Any thoughts as I don't want to spend more than I need? - ideally I'd want to flip the 2700 and spend a little bit more on a CPU upgrade.

Might be worth testing your games out at say 1080p and seeing what framerate you're getting, or monitoring cpu usage just to work out whether you are actually cpu or gpu limited in the games you play.

I think the gaming performance of the 2700 is actually similar to the 2600x, and the 3600 is very close to the 3600x which makes this video relevant if you want a summary of how the options might compare

So you will see noticeable improvements with a 3600, but then again the 5600x should offer further improvements and if you start playing different games in the future the 5600x is more likely to keep you at higher framerates. Up to you whether it's worth it or not!

Hey thanks very much for that reply. The 5700XT they reference in the charts is probably the closest match to my 1080ti and based on that I'm not going to see much difference unless I upgrade to Ampere.
