Ryzen 3600 or 3600x on a B350

Trying to make the best decisions for my sons PC, but not entirely sure what I am doing, please can someone help advise?

B350 MSI Gaming Pro Carbon - latest Beta Bios
Corsair 3200 CL16
EVGA SuperNova 750 G3
Vega 64
1080 144hz XG2401

I bought him a 3600 for his birthday. Based on the strength of the reviews I told him I could OC to match close to the 3600X, with the money saved I put this towards an RGB Coolermaster 410.

However, in hindisght, I overlooked the fact the reviews were using X570 motherboards and Samsung b-die and greater skills when getting the 3600 to 3600x levels.

Now, its all working great 100% stable, running cool 65c at around 4.1 all cores under Prime95, so I assume it boosts to the full 4.2 on two cores. I can only get the ram to 2933 still not 3200. The cooler was difficult to fit but looks great.

But, I cannot overclock the 3600 at all. So I am left with a stock 3600 (better than the original OC 1600) but still I think I made a mistake.

  1. When using a B350 motherboard would the 3600x be a much better choice?
  2. Will the automatic 3600X inbuilt OC still work on the B350 to get 4.4 boosts on two cores? Or will the B350 cause the 3600X to throttle back to 3600 levels anyway?
I'm fine with ordering a 3600X and swapping out the 3600 to use in my PC (I was planning an upgrade), but which is better for his pure gaming pc at 1080p 144hz monitor:
  • B350 with 3600x and keep the 3200 Hynix ram
  • B350 keep the 3600 but upgrade the RAM to 3200 CL14 BDie
 
Surely the best thing to do wold be just load some of the games he plays and look at the FPS when he's playing it? If they are hitting the required 120-144Hz then there is no point in worrying really. I'd just look at making sure you have the RAM in the correct slots, and if you can't get past 2933MHz, bump the voltage to 1.4v and set it to some slacker timings then work backwards, B-die is a money sink for pretty much a couple of % difference with Ryzen 3xxx.
 
In LOL it's mostly 144fps, but I've watched it dip to 120fps in big team fights. It's a g-sync monitor so still stays smooth as the framerate varies.
While this seems excellent I think he would like it locked in at 144fps no matter what and maybe the 3600X could do this?

I know LOL has awful use of cores and is old code but I think for esports, don't they complain if the framerate drops below 144?
 
I honestly don't think so. It's a bit of a waste, a lot of extra money for little gain.

A 3600X over a 3600 isn't going to give you 25 extra frames, and in other games, no way a Vega 64 will hit 144hz anyway.

LOL is not multi-core friendly, so really, if that was say, a primary focus, a 9600K OC'd to 4.8-5Ghz would be a better CPU.

Honestly I think just leave the setup as it is, you'd be spending hundreds for minimal gains.

That's why I thought maybe the 3600x with two cores at 4.4Ghz would have been the better choice for LOL compared to the 3600 with two cores at 4.2Ghz.

If it was LOL only I agree there are different Chipset/Intel paths but he also plays other games that are multicore dependant. I also want to keep this PC viable for gaming for the next 2 years.

It's £50 net difference for me to swap out the 3600 to a 3600X.

Or an £80 net difference for me to swap out the hynix for bdie and OC the memory and keep the 3600.
 
It's only a very slight improvement though. The 3600X isn't going to bring you to a stable 144hz if the 3600 is dipping to 120. You'll just be paying for a handful of frames.

Chasing 144fps isn't really any great metric to measure a CPU by, as games vary so differently, and in most cases unless you've a monster GPU, it's not a realistic aim either. Most people with 144hz monitors are aiming for 90-100fps range.

The only way to guarantee a consistent 144fps in LOL is Intel really. Again it is up to you but to throw that much money at it just for LOL (when already getting 120fps min) seems a waste, as you could get an outright better CPU with the difference cost of the 3600X/ram that would a) excel at other games and b) be much more future proof.

Eg a 3700x.

Ryzen is not good for LoL.

Even at stock a 3600 will be fine for a few years at least.
