Ryzen 3900x cooling

Hi all, is a Ryzen 3900x ok to be cooled by the stock cooler that came with a Ryzen 3600x? Been encountering crashing and inconsistent gaming performance

Specs for the rest of the pc:
Graphics card: Gigabyte 3060 Vision
Ram: 32Gb ddr4
MOBO: MSI B450M-VDH Max
PSU: Corsair RM650

HW monitor temps show the CPU's general temp as normal, however, the Package and CCD readings are mid 80s and have gone into the low 90s. Any advice appreciated.

Not really, it came with the prism, but it will probably be just about adequate in gaming. What kind of crashing, do you mean CTDs, BSODs? What resolution and games?

BSODs I think - certainly the most recent one was BSOD. Fortnite is the main game being played on it - feels very choppy and framey at times (1080p).

Hmm, overheating is possible, but fortnite can run on a potato, so I'd be surprised if a 3900X can't handle it.

Are you playing games on an SSD, or HDD?



I'd usually test your memory and SSD for errors, before I did anything else. What speed is the memory running at? Is XMP enabled? How many sticks?

Did everything run completely fine before you upgraded the CPU, or is this a persistent problem?

it's actually only started since upgrading to 3060 (from GTX 970) and upgrading the PSU (from 500w). This upgrade took place a couple of days ago.

Using an SSD and 4x 8gb sticks of ddr4 at 3200MHz.

Hmm, in that case, I think I'd start with clearing out the drivers and doing a fresh install, preferably using a different driver version to what you're using now. What did you do, when installing the drivers? Have you updated the others too (like chipset)?

I'd still run a test on your memory anyway, because so often BSODs are due to memory.

Did you clear the CMOS at any point, or is the memory still running the same settings as when it was stable?

Is the graphics card and PSU brand new?

What kind of test would I perform on memory, just a Windows Memory Diagnostic? What would I be looking for there? Memory is still running on same settings as before, yeah, not sure about how to clear CMOS, will look into it.

I haven't updated any drivers besides Nvidia, so will start there.

I didn't mean: clear the CMOS. I was just asking because memory errors are more likely if the memory wasn't configured properly after a reset. if it ran fine before the upgrade and nothing has been changed, then I'd leave it be.

Yeah, WMD is fine for now. You should get no errors.
