Ryzen 5 3600 Slow Clocks

Morning folks,

I built my system about 6months ago now and it’s been running perfectly, however this morning it behaved very strangely. I was doing some general work tasks (office, pdfs etc. nothing particularly tasking) and noticed that it wasn’t quite as snappy as normal...even loading a webpage was slow.

To test my theory that it was running slower than before I did a run in cinebench r20 to find my score was about a third of what it should have been. Investigating a bit more with HWInfo I found that the clocks were not going above approx. 1.6...? Temperatures were all fine, sitting around 40 deg C.

I restarted the PC and clocks were back to boosting to 4.2 but I was now getting some strange artefacts appearing. Another restart later and it seemed to be resolved but I updated my graphics drivers to the latest anyway and all seems okay now.

Any thoughts on what might have been the cause? It’s a Ryzen 5 3600 on a B550 motherboard with PBO enabled.

Cheers, S

Strange, artefacts are always GPU related. Dots are memory, polygons are GPU. The GPU wouldn't slow anything down. Check your windows eventlog, very strange. Low speed usually is due to the powerplan. My laptop does this to conserve battery.
