Hello guys, I currently have an RTX 3080 paired with a Ryzen 5 3600 and 2x8GB 3600mhz ram running on a b450m pro vdh max and 750w psu.

I mainly game in 1080p and many people have told me that my motherboard is bad and my processor is bottlenecking my GPU.

I wanted to know if I could get a 5600X and is it worth the upgrade?

And what about the stock situation? Is it as bad as the 3080? Or is there a chance I’ll get it on christmas

Don't worry lot of the guys here just love super high res interactive waffle simulators and don't actually game so don't understand highend gpu + 1080p.

Or it could be that not everyone can afford to upgrade their whole system at the same time so do it one piece at a time?

5600X Zen 3 from AMD, boosts over the 3600 Zen 2 from AMD up to 30 plus percent in analysis in reviews. With a 1080P display, your bottleneck will primarily be CPU, 1080P versus a 4K resolution, which will be GPU limited. The RTX3080 from NVIDIA has been shown to perform well at 4K due to its design as a compute device, if you go to a lower resolution then your CPU will govern your FPS in games to an extent.

A good test is the performance at 1080p of CS:GO (Counter Strike GO) with your old CPU versus a 5600X Zen 3 and you will see a dramatic uplift. Whether you will be able to tell at 144 Hertz the difference is down to the individual (a subjective test) unless you measure it with software.

I am planning to get a 5600X (when it ever goes back on sale), because my 6700K is getting long in the tooth now, and is outperformed by a budget 3300 Zen 2 from AMD. And like you, I upgrade when I can afford to do so.

I anticipate larger scale availability in early 2021, before Christmas demand has gone crazy due to the lockdown, and people working from home.

I don’t understand it,no.with 3080 you can do 1440p 144hz.so why use ancient low res 1080p res unless monitor is incapable? what’s the point of £700 gpu anyway, isn’t 1080p CPU dependant..

Yes I am running at 144hz

and why not...

Because a 3080 is entirely unnecessary for 1080p gaming.

If you've got a 1080p 144Hz monitor, it doesn't matter whether you have a 3080 or something like a 2070. Both cards are capable of 144fps in pretty much all games at maxed out settings.
You could argue "But in the future, games are going to be harder to run. The 3080 ensures I can run new games at 1080p with 144fps!", and you'd be right, but you'd still be able to do that with a cheaper card like the 3070, even in the future.

If you're one of those people that buys a GPU once every 5 years and makes it last, I can sort of understand, but I'll still sit firmly on the notion that for 1080p, a 3080 is just a waste of money, when a slower card would do the exact same job.

If you're hung up on the idea "but a 3080 gives more fps than a 3070" (for example), it's important to understand that the refresh rate of your monitor is effectively the limiting factor. If your monitor is 144Hz, 144fps is the frame rate you should be targeting with your GPU purchases. getting 300fps on a 144Hz monitor doesn't look any better than getting 144fps on the same monitor.

decent stock vs gpus for sure.
yea i say its worth it.

Its very common many buy a gpu that is limited by the old cpu.
and then are surprised why they dont have more benefit and fps.
until they upgrade the cpu and mboard and maybe even the psu and ram.
Its called magical thinking, people buy the PR from the company and dont understand the context

I've seen a lot of people say this and it's just not true.

This isn't even "Ultra/maxed" quality 1080p and a 3060 Ti is barely keeping above the 144 Hz average at High setting. As you can see the 2070 you mentioned is 30 fps on average below what a 144Hz monitor would give you.

Granted these numbers are close enough but I am always interested when people are like "a 3080 is overkill for 1080p" which let's be honest it should be for the price. However, if you do like higher framerates such as 144 Hz and don't want to suffer drops during intense scenes a 3080 isn't far off from being what you want for 1080p... kind of ridiculous really.

You can never be overkill, look at things like modern warfare that run like crap getting worse with each 100gb patch, if you into gaming you want solid frames above 144 always at least or 240+ if you got a decent 1080p monitor, 240+ frames solid beats 4k pretty any day for me personally, latency is way better. Theres a reason competitve players play 1080p with highest end gear possible, it doesnt matter if you clicking X every couple of minutes with your netflix style interactive waffle games, but for actual games that are fun it matters. Don't let the high res snobs tell you otherwise, I get this forum is enthusiast forum so bound to be saying go super high res pretty pretty but its not optimal if latency is important to you, feel is more important than pretty to me. Bound to trigger people but that is the counter arguement, each to thier own, not everyone is interested in eeking out better performance and 1440p+ does look amazing, Id be happy to play racers and platformers on it but for FPS 1080p is king.

Also its not cpu or gpu at certian res'es, its not one or the other black or white, 1080p is just more cpu bound than 1440p, a high end card will still slay a mid range card at 1080p, anyone saying they don't just isnt looking at the data.

I think you are mistaking HU’s high quality annotation. When they say high quality they meant everything maxed out.

also if you run 144hz VRR and your frame rate is higher than 144FPS you are not utilising the VRR. Yes you are effectively capping FPS to 144.

there are many videos and people say that to take advantage of the VRR smoothness and goodness you are better off with max FPS of 143. With regards to the 1% low that is really what you need to watch in terms what that number correlate to your screen. If it is 100FPS on VRR you are still golden. But if it is 60-80FPS then you might be a bit buggered as the overdrive setting will not cope well with such low FPS as well as 143FPS.

so from that chart over 18game average 2070s 1080ti are more than enough for 144Hz VRR displays. The key is that you don’t need over 144FPS to displays you want it as close to 144

Any of the rtx 3000 or RX 6000 cards on 1080p 144Hz is a complete waste of money.

even 2080s and 2080ti are wasted at 1080p.

But the caveat is of course depend on which game you play. I think some of the newer games won’t hit over 144FPS average even with 3090. It is just one of those things
