I've purchased a 2700x CPU for my sons birthday next month, he is expecting a 2600x so will be a surprise for him.

Not being from a retail store it has come in the plastic blister pack and boxed fan in the postage box and not retail box (reply from the company is that when they get bulk supply from AMD they generally don't come retail packed)

Does anybody who has purchased the same have the retail box they would be willing to sell/donate?

Kind of puts a damper on the grand unwrapping when it happens and his reaction to seeing the 2700x box and not what he thought.

That's a shame. But hopefully as he is getting better than he expected just say you opted for the environmentally friendly version as you were thinking of future generations.

Not sure how many would be willing to give up their retail box as this would probably hurt resale value down the line. Some do occasionally appear on eBay though - either the empty box by itself or more likely with the stock HSF if it's surplus to the owner's requirements. Looks like the going rate is about £10 for the box up to £30 for a box with the HSF. As the boxes for the Ryzen 7s are all identical (I think there's only a sticker on it somewhere that shows exactly which Ryzen 7 it's for), you might find that one even from a first gen Ryzen 7 will do with some blacking out/peeling off of the sticker.

Send it back and ask for a retail version of the CPU? (providing you paid for a retail cpu not oem)

As far as im aware (with Intel anyway) OEMs come in a little box and no cooler but retail versions come in a sealed box which if you had a retail CPU should come sealed.

He'd think i was taking illegal substances if i came out with that:D
How about saying that instead of big retail box which just ends up taking space in some cupboard/shelf you decided that money would be more useful in better CPU itself?

Text in seal sticker and CPU showing through side of the box is what enables differentiating specific models.

Looks like we're gonna have to try something off the wall. It's the CPU in its blister pack and Wraith Prism cooler, just not in the retail box. I suppose we could try wrapping up the cooler on its own and get him to open that before the CPU, that way he would be thinking that the cooler only comes with the 2700x and not 2600x which he is expecting........

Are you sure it is not a return item or a damaged box?

Is it like intel where retail has a longer warranty?

The reply i got from Freshtech was this "as we are system builders and not a retail store we are only supplied with bulk pack cpus from amd. To get it safe to you in the post we have used a blister packet"

I'm happy the what i've got, just disappointed it's not in the original box which would have made the Birthday surprise go a bit smoother than we now have to make it.
