Hi all,

I have an issue with task manager on my new system.
It is constantly reporting 100% CPU usage when clearly it isn't at 100%.
I also have "argus monitor" which even when as low as 8-10% CPU usage on argus, task manager still shows 100% CPU usage.

Here is a picture from safe mode:

Does anyone have any idea how I can rectify this?

Something else interesting. If I go to "silent mode" on the Dragon Center for my MSI board, the CPU drops to 77% and is fixed there (it goes higher under load.) Could it be something to do with the power "plan"?

I would uninstall all other monitoring software or try a fresh install on a spare drive just to see what happens. My guess is something is behaving "unexpectedly" and will be quicker to try this than troubleshoot each program individually.

OK. Would safe mode not correct this?

Also I have tried using the "balanced" power plan in Windows. Initially this didn't help, but then I reset the options to default and it seems to have sort of solved it. However the CPU usage still doesn't match up argus monitor, msi dragon center etc so very strange behaviour....

Have you downloaded any software from a none trustworthy source, do you mine etc? Scanned for malware etc running hidden in the background?

If it's not that, it's likely an issue with the idle states not being set correctly or a mobo issue. I believe this was an issue months ago on an old windows update, but it was patched/fixed so very unlikely to be that.

I would format with fresh install on latest mobo bios, chipset drivers and windows updates. Don't install any 3rd party software before you check it.

If you're unsure of your software, try uploading it first to virustotal.com (capped at 250Mb iirc).

Go to the users tab and check the cpu usage there. Ensure no other accounts are using resources. Sometimes windows 10's task manager can get into some strange states. I use process explorer as a more in depth tool.

Probably a "feature" of one of the bodged windows updates they have been rolling out lately
Your temperatures should tell you if it's actually at 100% or just a glitch

No mining etc. I've run a full malwarebytes scan + windows defender scan, no problems

Thanks - I have checked and definitely only my account.

Again, the total CPU usage doesn't match what is showing on mine.

I actually just saw it go to 105% on my user!

That's the thing, my other software report fairly normal CPU usage and temperatures.

Are you using the latest version of this software?
Yep - I have tested with it uninstalled as well.

I just said **** it and reinstalled. Then installed AMD chipset drivers, whacked it on "ryzen balanced" and haven't touched it. Seems OK now.

Sometimes just reinstalling is the best option
Make a macrium image once you installed all software, drivers etc
It's much faster to install the image than install windows and everything else
Literally less than 3 minutes to load my 40gb image
From a M2 to a M2 so bit slower if from sata ssds

Ah nice, that's a good idea. I'll get on that. Thanks.

You're welcome mate
You either make a USB using the macrium software so you can recover with image
Or add macrium PE to boot menu
Though don't remember if that's in free version or not
Been using macrium for years saved me so much time
