I want to build a ryzen system trying out AM5 for the first time, so im looking at a B650 board.

What are the Ryzen 3 processors like for entry level gaming and also, what would be the like for like processor to my i5 12400F?.

Cheers

While the AMD APU's are much better than the usual onboard graphics they are still not good for anything more than low detail 720p/1080p. For a decent gaming experience you are still going to want a decent gpu.

If you already have a 12400F and want more grunt why don't you just drop a 12600K/12700K in the pc instead? For 1080p gaming the equivalent AMD cpu would be around the AM4 5600x, AM5 cpu's are way ahead of it.

With DDR5, the 8400F performs more or less the same. The 8000 series CPUs are meant to be APUs, the F CPUs just lack the integrated graphics. You'd not normally buy one of these CPUs if planning to use a graphics card.

The cheapest regular Ryzen CPU is the Ryzen 5 7400, though the cache is cut in half (16 from 32) compared to the 7500F.

I'm not aware of any Ryzen 3 CPUs on AM5.

Note that these tests are done with a 5090, with a lower-end card (e.g. RX 6600) you're unlikely to notice.

Thanks for reply.

Im looking to build this system alongside my intel. I want to have a computer from each side that still has an upgrade path. These are separate to the systems im building for my game recordings.

I will want to test the am5 stuff with games like i will with the intel. I was only thinking of the 8300 as id like to assume its fairly cheap to buy and would be good to see how new gen 4c8t performs. I read mix reviews and AI overviews of whats comparable to my i5 and whats good for gaming.

I dont care for the graphics side of the processor as i have a laptop with a 780m and currently i own a gtx 750ti, gtx 960, gtx 970 and a gtx 980 which i have for testing purposes, but i think im still inclined to get an RX 7600 and/or a 4060 or one of each as my main graphics cards that will stay permanently in these systems.

My monitor is 1080p, but im getting a 1440p ultrawide to go along side it this week.

So far as I'm aware, those CPUs are not available to DIY and would likely come as "tray" CPUs with no warranty.

This channel managed to get one of the Epyc ones:
