I have a Ryzen 9 3950X that is 3years old now and I am wondering if upgrading to a Ryzen 9 5950X would be a benefit, especially since I have swapped my RTX 2080Ti SLi out for a single RX 7900 XTX. I have been offered a 5950X (used of course) to £259 and my 3950X I have been offered £175 for, so the upgrade cost would be roughly £84.
But would it be worthwhile for that price ?
I do some editing but on hobby basis, and gaming I do at 2560x1440 @ 165Hz.

Or would it be wiser to spend the saved money at upgrading the RTX 3080 10GB in my wife's pc ? (R9 3900X, 32GB 3200mhz)

i would. I run a 5900X and love it. The difference all round in that upgrade would be fairly noticeable, especially for £84!

Seems like a nice easy and cheap upgrade.

For gaming? do you need all the cores, if not a 5800X3D would be a better games chip typically and is the same upgrade price?

I do a bit of video/picture editing on hobby basis, and 8cores/16threads in these circumstances is just a bit too time consuming.
I also thanked yes to the 5950X, so it will probably be here Monday/Tuesday.

Yes definitely a worthwhile upgrade for the price. Worth doing some stability testing on the 5950x when you get it though as mine wasn't 100% stable unless slightly over volted.

Well it turns out it was a dud (scam) regarding the R9 5950X. Excuses from the seller not getting it shipped and not answering my messages etc. So I called his number this morning, but no answer. However 15min later he transferred the payment back to me.... so next time I'll look for that cpu I'll go on ebay.
