Hi Guys,

I'm building a new rig to replace my I7-920 system I've been using since 2009.

Very casual gaming on GTAV on an existing 1060.
Little bit of video editoring and photoshop.
Will need to run multiple VMs for IT projects and training. so wanted decent RAM and core count.

Mobo £91.99 GA-AB350M-Gaming 3
RAM £239.99 Fury Black 32GB
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/king...al-channel-kit-hx424c15fbk2-32-my-256-ks.html
CPU £248 1600X
SSD £249 960 evo 500GB pci SSD
Power Supply £77.99 550W TX550M
case £69.95 PRodigy M MATX.

TOTAL = 976
TOTAL (if 1700) = 1025
The 1600X is out of stock until next Friday so I might upgrade this to 1700.

With my choice in RAM - (high capacity in 2 sticks so i can expand if needed for VMs) is there any reasonable chance of a stable OC if I went for the the 1700? (the extra two cores and abilty to have it before the weekend might justify the price increase.)

I went with this mobo as it was mico ATX but had two 16x slots (1 only at 4x) - but that opens up the option for a 10Gb/s NIC down the line if I upgrade my server.

I was keen to get good storage performance and capacity (again for VMs). The 960 evo over the pro was £50 cheaper. I didn't think i'd notice the difference and both will be fastly faster than my SATA SSDs from 4 years ago.

550W PSU should be plenty right?

Stock cooler OK for a basic rig? I would have added a Hydro H60 but not knowing if there is an OC possible on my RAM I've left it off for now.

Any glarring mistakes or improvments would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
T.

The Ryzen X cpu does not come with a cooler and are not as cost effective if your going to overclock the non x cpu. Make sure the cooler you choose is AM4 compatable.

Thanks Micky.

I has assumed they would come with the OEM cooler - so I'll have to add one then.
I dont really want to over clock all that much - hence getting the 1600x and running it stock. But I'm impatient so considered the non X 1700 instead.

noctua U12S comes with fittings from OCUK or Alpenfohn Ben Nevis if you want cheaper. I have the noctua its good but ugly.

Make you update the BIOS if it comes with F2 to F4

Thanks Relentlesss - I'll check those out.

Any issues with the RAM I picked - this is the area I found hardest to research.

32GB might not play well in terms of speeds. I have 2 x 8GB Team Group 3200 from OCUK in Gigabyte B350 Gaming board and it runs at rated speeds with XMP profile no issues what so ever

Regards the coolers make sure you buy AM4 specific version

Just go with the 1600 and use the stock cooler for a small overclock. Saves you £50+ that way.

Is it only the X models which don't have the CPU cooler?
1700 £300
1600X £250
1600 £218

if the non X version have an included OEM cooler, I'd be more tempted to go up to the 1700 so that i have the extra two cores for VMs. I might even eek out a similar OC?

EDIT - Confirmed the non X does have a cooler:
"Includes AMD Wraith Spire CPU cooler with red LED ring!"

Think I'll go up to the 1700 then. it's over kill but I'll probably run this rig for a long time so I'd rather not skimp today.
