Currently have a 1600X.

Looking at a 3600, 3600X or at a push a 3700X. 2 questions..

1 - Will I see much of an increase in general performance - windows, web, gaming
2 - Will it be ok on my mobo Asus Strix B350F Gaming. Ive put the latest bios on it.

Rest of spec in sig

I personally wouldn't bother replacing that cpu unless you increase the core count. The 3700x would be a decent upgrade.

As to whether you'd see much of an increase in performance would depend on the application. Some games use more cores than others. The trend is only going to be more cores though, especially with the new consoles on the way.

I noticed a performance drop when I went from a 3950X to a 1920X in gaming performance, so assuming you pair the cpu with decent memory3200/CL14 or preferably 3600CL14/16 then I reckon you’ll notice a performance increase.

Go for a 3600 as theres currently no point in spending more for gaming and use the cash saved to go towards a better gpu.

I don't see as there's a huge difference between a 1600 and a 3600 though. A bit more ipc, more cache and slightly more efficient. Not really worth the cost of upgrading if you ask me.

If you're going to go to the effort and cost of changing cpu's may as well at least add a couple of cores for future proofing.

I feel the 3700x is the best value of the Ryzen lineup.

I went from a day1 1600 to a 3600X, which for me was worth it as I've started using a drawing tablet and I needed the little extra CPU grunt.

My mobo is a 370X based board (GA-AX370-Gaming 5)

My advise and it's just that, a 3700x is calling your name. Will last you a couple of years. Waiting for un released stuff is silly if you don't have an official release date and it's close. 8 cores minimum imo.

You gain a nice boost in single core which at this current time has a larger effect on games than more cores as shown by the recent gaming benchmarks showing that even the 4 core ryzen 3 3300x is perfectly fine for gaming so more than 6 cores won't be needed for a long time by which the 8/12 core CPUs will be going for peanuts second hand.

It’s 142 for a new retail 3600, depending on your set-up, sell the cooler and the bundled games and you are not far off the used price of a 1600, if the cost to change is minimal and performance can jump upto 1/3 depending on the benchmark, it seems like a decent time to upgrade.

I would say go for a 3700x as well. Currently there are a lot of deals around. I think the cheapest you can find is £240 mark which is awesome for 3700x.

If you can’t stretch then go with a 3600 non x. 3600x is still floating around £180-£190 mark which isn’t good value to me when compared with 3700x prices right now. Where the 3600 is around £150-160 so decent.

3600 is definitely going to be better “experience” for you. It is for sure faster on all benchmarks than 1600x. Will you feel it in real life - yes you will, for one the ram can be clocked higher, cpu boost higher, less heat means less likely to throttle. However it really does depend on your motherboards VRM capabilities if it can squeeze last bit of performance out of the CPU.
