Hi,

Might be a dumb question but is there a program like Fahmon for Seti@Home?

Only wondering as I have a few pc's linked that I can't always check so being able to check them from my main PC would be a bonus.

Not a killer if there isn't but would be nice.

The only prog I could find is Seti@Boincwatch but this didn't seem to do what Fahmon does and crashed before I could even set it up.

I use BoincView, which offers the same functions as the standard BOINC Manager but with the added bonus of being able to add all your networked PCs for viewing.

This looks exactly like what I was looking for... except i'm to dumb to understand it lol

I got my main PC working on it but don't understand how to add more.

It said something about not communicating on port 31416.

Any help or a link to a guide would be very welcome.

Ok, here goes

1. Open the Locations setup and click Add Location. Give it a name.

2. To add a remote PC, choose the 'Get data via network access' option. The Hostname or IP address and BOINC password text boxes then become enabled. Enter the IP address or (better) the hostname of the PC you're adding. Now this is where it gets a little awkward...

3. Each PC has its own 'BOINC password' that must be entered within BOINCView. Within the BOINC folder on each PC there should be a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg - this file contains the BOINC password for that particular client on that particular host. Open the file using wordpad, notepad or some other text editor, write the string inside it down on a bit of paper or whatever and enter that string as the BOINC password within BOINCView. If there isn't a gui_rpc_auth.cfg file in the BOINC folder on the remote PC, create one and write any password in it (one line only), then use that in BOINCView.

4. Also within the BOINC folder, you'll need to create a file called remote_hosts.cfg. This tells BOINCView that it has access rights to that remote PC, and simply needs to contain the hostname of that PC (I also add the hostname of the main PC to it, on a separate line, but I don't know if that's necessary).

5. Once you've entered the relevant hostname and BOINC password for that location in BOINCView, click Close. Hopefully you'll have just successfully added a remote host to BOINCView, and should be able to see all the work that that PC has on it for all the BOINC projects it's attached to.

6. Repeat 1-5 for each PC you want to add.

It sounds more complicated than it is, really! It's just getting the remote_hosts.cfg sorted and inputting the correct BOINC password for each PC that's the slightly tricky part, but there's not much to it. Give me a shout if you need any further help sorting it

I will admit that I must be thicker than I first thought

Basicly I keep getting a message that says:

There seems to be no BOINC client responding at port 31416. Use port anyway?

I don't have any firewalls installed other than windows firewall which I have tried turned off to see if it was that but the problem is still there.

I have added both hostnames (Mine & other PC's) to the remote_hosts.cfg file which I then put into the Boinc folder on the other PC...

Normally I get this stuff quite quick but my brain isn't working as well as it normally does

Did you add the password from the remote host's gui_rpg_auth.cfg file into the location as well? Won't work without that. If so then check the BOINC version you're running, should be 5.8.x for the latest version of BoincView (1.4.2); I've found that not all versions of BoincView play nicely with all versions of BOINC.

Edit: Hmm, seems v1.4.2 doesn't have the 'Get data...' options outlined in Step 2 above. Sorry if that caused any confusion, only just updated to the latest version . Everything else remains the same though, so just check you're inputting the correct password for each host and everything should be fine.

Don't worry about the 'Get Data' part, I just went to the computers tab instead and it had basicly what you were talking about.

Just checked what version of Boinc I have running & I have:

5.10.30 version

Should I get 5.8.x?

Edit: Just to let you know. I have my main PC with BoincWatch installed on it which is Vista 64, two more PC's that are Vista 64 and another that is WinXP 32.

Hi again,

Did quickly try the 5.8.x but had the same error about no BOINC client on the 31416 port.

I then reinstalled the latest 5.10.x

Going to stop trying for tonight but will try again tomorrow probably.

Just to let you know every PC can see each other for files or VNC etc it just seems to be BoincView which leads me to feel that I may need to change the ports or something is blocking it.

Will troubleshoot some more tomorrow.

Hey again guys.

To answer a few questions:

I have forwarded the 31416 port on my router and switched off all firewalls while I was trying and still got the error that there is no Boinc Client repsonding on the 31416 port.

I was closing and re-opening Boinc but not resetting the PC's. I now have tried resetting the PC's but again, still have the port message.

Going to try running BoincView from a different PC and see if this helps now.
