I swear i'll give a cookie to whoever helps me sort this problem out because i've about had it with these crashes and i'm ready to throw my PC out of the ****ing window.

Basically I installed SHoC and played with the Complete 2009 mod about a month or so back. Once I finished I unsintalled through Steam and that was that. I'm waiting on another mod to come out called L.U.R.K so I thought i'd try the older version.

I re-download S.T.A.L.K.E.R again off Steam and have a wee tazz while it's in Vanilla. 10 minutes later the game freezes and my screen goes black, and that's it. I thought it must have been a one off as i've never had it do this so I tried it again and the same thing happened. I then tried it with L.U.R.K and same thing happened again.

Won't go into too much detail but her are the things i've tried so far. Bear in mind that all my other games work fine, this one just freezes and then the screen goes black but the computer doesn't restart, I have to manually switch it off and then on again.
  • Deleting and re-downloading the game.
  • Using different display drivers 11.8, 11.9 etc. all the way up to 12.1
  • Using my old DVD to install it onto my HDD and running the Vanilla version (once I unistalled the Steam version)
  • Modding the HDD version
  • Trying different graphic configurations

I'm really starting to lose it here. I'm pretty sure it must be a file somewhere from Complete 2009 or something because all my other games work fine. It usually happens after around 12-13 minutes of play.

Please help! :(

Had the same prob myself installed the 10005 patch and everything fine:)

Have you tried removing any overclocks as the x ray engine can be really sensitive to OC'ing.

seriously worth trying if you haven't already.

Will give that a go tomorrow. The weird this is the game worked fine the 1st time I played it off Steam without a hiccup with everything OC'd as it is now but the 2nd time I re-installed it it's not.

Wtf is going on???

Do you get an error message of any kind? If so, what does it read?

Nothing at all. The game simply freezes, and I can hear the sound go on for about 2-3 more seconds and then it just goes to a black screen. I can't do Ctrl + Alt + Del and the only fix is to hold the power button till the computer turns off then I have to turn it back on again. It's really ****ing me off, i've been trying to get it working over the last 2 hours and i've just about had enough now.

I've found this handy in the past for Stalker issues, they're usually quick to respond, too.

Off the top of my head the only other thing I can think of is, (aside from what bigjimmy said - which is what I would consider first), is to perhaps try a free uninstaller program like revo uninstaller. You may then be able to remove traces of something that is causing the engine to throw a fit.

Sounds like a total engine crash, arc@css idea is a good one might be a dodgy registry entry causing some sort of conflict.

I would try a full uninstall, after which i personally always use CCleaner and do a registry fix which always finds the dead registry entried for the game i've uninstalled click fix issues and save a copy to desktop if your para it might mess something up.

Another few things to try are

Expanding your page file another 1GB

setting the x ray engines CPU priority to high (that actually solved all my CTD issues in call of pripyat)

The great thing about the x ray engine is one persons fix is another persons crash:p

are you trying to use a game save made when you were using the complete mod on your vanilla stalker? if so that is almost certainly causing the crash.

the saves from the mod are incompatible with the saves from the vanilla version and vice versa

Thanks for all your help guys but i'm giving up. The amount of things i've tried to do to get this to work is retarded. I'm positive it's something to do with a buggered registry somewhere that makes the engine crash but I don't know what it is and where to look. Today I tried the following...

  • Fully uninstalled everything + deleted any remaining files/folders.
  • Ran Ccleaner and cleaned the whole PC + registry.
  • Messed around with the page file size, disabling it and trying various other configurations (both on SSD and HDD's).
  • Running it without any mods.
  • Taking the X-Fire bridge off my cards so I only ran it on 1 card.
  • Swapped my RAM sticks around.

Really lost it with this game this time. I'm sure it must be something to do with my original Steam install/Complete 2009 Mod which worked fine the 1st time I ran it but wehn I re-installed the game it suddenly won't work.

I think the only way i'll get it to work is to do a full nuke/re-install job. Can't be arsed with all the messing about for the time being. Might do it once L.U.R.K 1.2 or Lost Alpha come out.

It would be interesting to see if it still did that when playing Clear Sky or COP.

Sorry to hear of your woes :(.....did you try the GSC forums?

Yeah, nowt there. :(

Like I said, worked fine the 1st time I installed it off Steam. When I came to re-install it that's when the problems started happening. You tried that People Soup yet? That's the main reason I re-installed but couldn't find any download links. :(

Sorry to hijack your thread a little but how on earth do you get into the south area of the map on C.O.P

Right a last bump before I re-install. Basically i've turned off 'Automatically Restart' in advanced settings in Windows so when it does crash I see what's caused it.

I'm now getting a BSO with the following:

atikmpag.sys

4edd79fe

Anyone have any clue? Will post a photo later, this is the Steam version too btw.
